Ärende: 2012 Picnic
====================
Hi Janis,

>> Ok, so far that's the date I'm figuring on then. We'll hold out a bit
>> longer before setting the weekend of July 19,20,21, 22. Giving myself

JK> > OK, will we be celebrating a couple of birthdays on the 21st as well
 JK> > (your daughter's and mine)?

JK> We could, though for my daughter it would be so difficult with all of
JK> the foods she avoids.. While she's eating local grass-fed beef and

At least she's in an area that supports all sorts of foods other than
the standard American diet so she can find things she can eat, easier.

JK> chicken (with no problems), her doctor has her staying away from all
JK> foods in the nightshade family (potatoes, peppers, mushrooms, red
JK> pepper, paprika and more). Boy can she feel it when someone forgets
JK> and puts one of those in the food she eats. She gave me the NEATEST

I'd have a problem, especially with tomatoes getting ready to come into
season soon. Actually, I use just about all the foods on that list so
I'd have to find alternatives if I had that kind of allergy problem.

JK> recipe for cheesecake made with all nut products.. I'll probably make
JK> one for the picnic, it was that incredible.

Sounds good to me. Any Asian markets available for durians? (G)

>> from the 10th to the 19th to unpack all those boxes could be a bit
>> drastic as I'm sure you understand. I don't want to wait too long to

JK> > We're OK with unpacked boxes, as long as we can get to the food prep
 JK> > areas.

 JK> hehe sounds good.

Story of our lives--pack up, move, unpack kitchen essentials, work
aroundd boxes until we get most everything unpacked, repeat. Some boxes
we end up repacking as there's not the space available to get everything
out, or, like the photos, needs a good sorting. I've been chipping away
at the build up of newspaper and other clippings with recipies, tossing
some, trimming, tossing keepers into a (smaller) box. Hopefully it'll be
to the point where I can file them before we move or after getting
resettled but the bulk of excess paper is disappearing.

JK> >BTW, are you losing those glass cabinets from the Windsor kitchen
JK> > or are they going with you? They do add a nice touch to the place.

JK> Yes, that is something that came with this house in Windsor, so we
JK> won't be taking it with us.

sigh! Hopefully the new owner will appreciate them.

JK> > A bit too far to stay at Pumpkin Hill Farms but it would be nice to
 JK> see > Ron & Linda again.

JK> Understand. Windsor is just a little less than an hour from our new
JK> place in Slaterville so Springs so staying at Pumpkin Hill Farms might
JK> be just too far away. The road to Ithaca (only one way in (g)) is a
JK> winding, torturously twisting road with long stretches of no-passing
JK> zones.. When we get behind a "Sunday Driver" or a farm-vehicle, we go

Sounds like some of the roads in the Catskills. (G)

JK> crazy hehe :) Maybe you could contact Ron and Linda once in Ithaca,
JK> and set something up for just a "hi there" visit on your way home or
 JK> something like that :)

We'll see; depends on time available. Trouble is, "hi there" visits
aren't as short as we always say we'll make them. They tend to go quite
long if you're not careful.

 JK> > We'll re-arrainge & do some visiting/sight seeing after the
JK> convention, > then get to western NY in probably early July. Go over
JK> to the Catskills > and go back to the Finger Lakes for the picnic,
 JK> then head south.

 JK> Should be fine :)

I just scheduled a medical appointment on the 31st so we know we'll have
to be home before then.

>> but I could be wrong... Our weather has been completely bonkers...
>> ranging from 90's one week to snowing in some nearby areas last night.
>> I'm sure you remember how fickle NY weather can be in years past, and
>> this year has been no exception :)

JK> > Steve said there was frost on the car this morning. Not sure if the
JK> > tomato plant was affected or not; it's closer to the shelter of the
JK> > house. It looked a little peak-ed this morning but did perk up some
JK> > after watering so maybe it was just thirsty.

JK> When we get threats of real cold here, I throw a sheet over whatever
JK> is planted.. Only problem is then getting out in the morning to remove
JK> the sheet (G). ..But better that than losing plants to the weather :)
JK> It's only caught me once in the time we've lived here so that's not
 JK> too bad.

I can remember having to go out late at night to pick tomatoes because
of a threat of frost; Dad didn't sheet over the gardens. We picked what
we could. By then the lettuce, corn & beans were pretty well gone and
just had the root crops besides the tomatoes.

>> > turvy planter on the front porch; our neighbors will tend to it
>> while > we're traveling in exchange for harvesting priviledges.

>> That's very kind of them :) A good arrangement.

JK> > Figured they would enjoy the fresh tomatoes too. They go up to the
JK> > farmer's market just about every week also; he says getting a fresh
JK> > empinada is how she gets him out of bed that early in the morning.
 JK> (G)

JK> hahahaha :) Nice plan (smile)

If it works...................... I won't be able to go to the market
this week (class from 8-5), not sure how much of it Steve can get to
either.

JK> The Ithaca farmer's market is so neat.. it was there I had my first
JK> Cuban Sandwich.. :) I love them, they are so good. Plenty of baked
JK> goods are available as well from what I remember, as well as quite a
JK> few grass-fed beef, lamb and pork farmers ..and of course the normal
 JK> veggies, veggies, veggies (g)

Sounds like maybe we need to bring an extra ice chest? (G)

Catch you later,
