=======================
ML> torpedoed); she had agoraphobia and paranoia and all
RH> Sounds plausible. But you would have thought that something like that
RH> would dissipate over time. I guess not tho.

I've never had the depth of trauma that WWII survivors
suffered and so can't say. But mental illness runs deep
in the family, especially on my mother's side. Also, we
learn early and quick and are very slow to give up the
knowledge, so our adaptations - makeshift though they be
- don't readapt quickly to changed circumstances; and if
we learn something wrong in the first place, it's hard
to fix later on.

ML> sorts of things ending in -ia ... I half hoped and half
RH> And never got any help for it so probably just kept spiralling
 RH> downward.

Exactly. I later found some prescriptions for antianxiety
drugs and muscle relaxants among her effects, but apparently
she didn't take many or perhaps any.

ML> children's inheritance. Hire a companion and just go
ML> spend a hundred grand or more. Why not? Probably fear,
RH> Possible, but who's to say at this point. You've done quite a bit of
RH> travel; did she like to hear about your trips?

Put it this way. I told her once that I was going to
Europe for I forget, a couple weeks or something, and
she went ballistic, saying it was unsafe, and I should
never go anyplace alone. I was 42 years old at the time.
I never told her before, because I'd figured out that
that would be the response, and I never told her after,
because I knew that would be the response.

ML> maybe some recognition that my brother needed a bit of
 ML> a cushion.
RH> That may very well be so--she saw herself in his issues and so wanted
 RH> to shield him somewhat.

Possibly, but she hid this concern behind pretty serious
abuse. The kid comes by his looniness honestly.

RH> Does your brother travel much

He flew to a conference of OCD sufferers in Texas a few
years ago (I applaud him for taking this initiative), and
every year approximately around 9/11 he emulates me and
takes a train to the WTC site (I have made a point of
flying on 9/11 every year since the attack). Other than
that, to my knowledge, he never leaves the Maryland-DC
area, though he used to go to Virginia to work.

RH> It's been interesting reading of the different places too. We've
RH> talked about how it would be interesting to trace the Apostle Paul's
RH> travels some time but probably as a guided trip (as the one to Israel
RH> was). We'd also like to get back to Germany & see more of Europe.

That would be a long and involved and probably expensive
trip. I've visited one Pauline site on purpose - Ephesus.

RH> Couple of years ago we visited Hershey Park and I picked up a good
RH> sized Hershey's cook book there. That, a mini cocoa mug and lunch were
RH> all we bought. Took the well sanitized tour
ML> Altogether too sanitized, if you ask me. I found it pretty
ML> condescending and irritating and in general not worth it.
RH> No, but Steve had talked about going as a kid and I wanted to go

Should have gone as a kid, though I guess the opportunity
wasn't there then. When I was a kid, classmates reported
favorably about the tour, so I figure it was better in the
1950s - though their expectations might have been lower as
well.

      Title: Hershey's Fudge Cake
 Categories: Cakes, Desserts
      Yield: 1 servings

  1 3/4 c Unbleached Flour, Unsifted 2 lg Eggs
1 ts Baking Powder 1 ts Vanilla Extract
1 ts Baking Soda 2/3 c Cocoa (Less if using Dutch
    1/2 ts Salt Process)
    1/2 c Vegetable Shortening Or 1/4 c PLUS 2 to 3 Tbls Hot Water
Vegetable Oil 1 c Milk Mixed With 1 Tbls
1 1/2 c Sugar Water (To Make Sour Milk)

This has been one of the most popular cakes Hershey has ever introduced. I
have made it since the 1950's so I would consider it a classic. Grease the
bottoms and sides of two 9 X 1 1/2-inch layer cake pans and preheat the
  oven to 350 degrees F.

Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt, blending well, and
set aside. Cream the shortening and sugar, with an electric mixer set on
high, and beat in the eggs and vanilla extract and continue beating until
light and fluffy. Blend the cocoa into the hot water to make a smooth
paste. Gradually add the cocoa mixture to the creamed mixture, stirring to
blend well. Add the flour mixture alternately with the milk to the creamed
mixture, beating well after each addition. Pour the batter into the
prepared pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 30 minutes, or until
the tops spring back when lightly pressed. Cool on racks for 10 minutes and
remove from the pans to cool completely. Frost with Chocolate-Buttercream
  Frosting.
