-=> spoke to Dale Shipp about Re: Garden 2012 <=-

DSac> Your house is exceptionally cool, Dale - the neighborhood is really
DSac> nice, the layout is great, and your yard might be small and shady,
DSac> but it's also beautiful and park-like. So there are trade-offs we make
DSac> when we choose our dwellings.

Correct -- we have been very happy living here for fourty years, and it
was a great place to raise our children. The inability to have a decent
garden is the only drawback that I can think of.

DSac> I would, however, miss having a garden terribly. I don't really save
DSac> all that much money in the long run I suppose - I'd need to have
DSac> a much bigger plot to be able to grow enough to put by for an entire
DSac> year - but there's a certain satisfaction Maryanne and I get from
DSac> teasing food from the soil.

Besides, where else can you get a decent tomato? Other than the campari
tomatoes that we buy at BJs, we've never had any luck buying a tomato
that tastes like a tomato should, even at the few farmer's stands
around.

DSac> soil that it was rich an fertile. We're starting from scratch here,
DSac> and even now, four years in (we didn't have a garden right away) the
DSac> ground here is still clay and sand and requires a lot of effort. We
DSac> keep bringing in compost and manure, but it will take years before
DSac> we see 10-foot tomato vines and 8-foot sunflowers again.

We've had a similar problem with our back yard. Our lot was originally
Maryland clay fill dirt. Eventually we go a decent dirt established in
the rear. BUT, when we had the remodel job done, they dug a foundation
for the addition and piled all that red clay in a pile in the back.
When they were done, they spread it back in around the foundation and
leveled it out -- but it was still just red clay. I think that it is
finally beginning to show some signs of getting a decent lawn
established. I was very tempted at one point to go to a farm store and
get either clover seed or alfalpha in an attempt to condition the soil.

DSh> I used to have blueberry bushes on the sunny side of the
DSh> garage, but what little fruit they produced went to the birds.

DSac> Blueberries, as JW recently noted, love an acidic soil. And if you
DSac> have berries on the bushes, you need bird netting to keep the birds
 DSac> away. It's a lot of work.

There is a pick-it-yourself farm about 10-15 miles from us. In a month
or so they will have blueberries. Their solution to that problem is
to string the rows of plants with tinsel, and little whirlygigs. Seems
to work because their plants are very prolific. You can hold the bucket
underneath a branch and just rake in a few cups of blueberries with a
swipe of the hand.
