Visited him in the nursing home yesterday. He's way
too young and healthy (!) to be there but is dealing
fairly gracefully with things. He carried on a
completely lucid and awake conversation for a couple
hours; first Annie and I were there, then our friend
Dan joined us. He can't stand up without assistance,
but his arms and legs are still controllable though
can't bear all his weight.

Apparently the story was that he is too sick for any
more chemo, so they put him in hospice, but as he
was showing no signs of dying, they kicked him out
of hospice, so he's in this fairly nice nursing
facility that has real PT, which he gets for over an
hour a day. His room is bright and airy, looking out
on a rather gardeny courtyard, and the other bed is
empty. The food is said to be good, but there is the
option for outside food to be brought in. Also one
alcoholic drink a day (not included) is allowed.
It seems to be an environment where he might actually
strengthen enough to go back home eventually.
Unfortunately there's apparently nothing to be done
for the cancer, but as long as it doesn't starve him
out or destroy a vital organ, he could hang on a good
long time.
