Ärende: Fuel Cost

To review - and here's the more full quote from Mike -

MR> Now I was getting 31mpg on regular gas. Gas was about 2.99
MR> here at the time and ethanol was 2.09, So it was almost 1
MR> dollar cheaper for ethanol. I filled the little sunofagun
MR> up and was all happy it was almost a dollar less. Well to
MR> make a long story short. ethanol cost a third less at the

Now - let's do the math. Ethanol based E-85 cost about a third less at the
pump. Mike got about a third less mileage from the E-85. He paid a third less
for the fuel and got a third less mileage from it. Looks like a wash to me. And
the ethanol is renewable whereas the petroleum is demonstrably finite. Plus the
ethanol fuels are less polluting to the atmosphere, the earth and our lives
overall.

So, if the cost per mile is about the same and by using ethanol we don't have
to worry about crap like the Exxon Valdez or the BP oil platform deal in the
Gulf of Mexico please tell me how you can, in good conscience, make the
statement "Hurts both the wallet and environment."

RH> Don't blame you in the least. We saw milage drop in different places
RH> where we had no choice but to use an ethanol/gasoline mix. IIRC, HI put
RH> in a 15% required ethanol law while we were there. Almost made it not
RH> worth running down to our favorite Korean hole in the wall place in
RH> Mililani or up to the North Shore and favorite places there.

DD> If they are charging the same for the stiffer mix - then someone is
DD> getting screwed. But, there is little difference between straight
DD> regular and 10% ethanol mix WRT gas mileage. At least with modern cars
DD> which have engine management confusers to deal with the differences.

RH> We had a 1992 Chevy Lumina APV mini van in HI, and, as I said, it was
RH> 15% ethanol, not 10. Over there it's a different can of worms than on
RH> the main land anyway; everything is higher priced. It's usually
RH> cheapest on Oahu where there are a couple of refineries but a good bit
RH> more on the other islands where it is barged in.

And you were in a special circumstance - along with the rest of the lotus
eaters in La-la Land.

DD> Keep in mind that we can grow more ethanol nearly immediately. Growing

RH> And drive up the price of other products that use corn. It's a fact
RH> that the use of ethanol has raised prices on other things that use
RH> corn. Animal feed, corn oil, etc for exaample.

Welcome to the dynamics of the real world. And be happy for the farmers who
raise the corn as they can now turn a bit of profit on their labours and
investment. Corn used to have a pretty short percentage of return on
investment. Currently it nearly matches soybeans and (with the drought in
Russia and short crop in Canada) wheat is moving in that direction. BTW - one
of the non-food uses for soybeans is for bio diesel.

The facts of life are - if we wish to continue the mobile lifestyle which the
development of the automobile and its attendant infrastructure has engendered
we are going to have to pay to maintain that lifestyle.

TANSTAAFL, Ruth.

DD> more oil to make fuel takes millions of years ... I can't wait that

RH> I'll differ with that statement but not get into it here. You know my
 RH> point of view there.

Actually, no. I don't.
