I'm still in Washington!

We had a disagreement with United Airlines.

Short version - we were comfortably ensconced in our
seats when someone came up to Lilli and said that she
was downgraded! She refused to get out of her seat,
and one thing led to another, and after an hour (which
United took as a 35 minute delay) we were both kicked
off the plane. More later, but suffice it to say that
they threatened police prosecution (which I welcomed);
a protracted hostage negotiation took place, with Lilli's
seat the hostage and myself the negotiator (the proximate
cause of my being dumped from the flight). We finally
left the aircraft when the highest available official
came aboard and pleaded with us.

Lilli is livid; I found it all semi-amusing but
annoying enough. 

I believe they have tried to half-apologize, as we are in
the Hilton at their expense, with $120 of food vouchers
(good only yesterday or today :( and only at the airport
or at the restaurant at the Hilton), a $50 cab voucher
(ditto), and she got $1200 credit (i.e. a good percentage
of the value of her ticket) toward a future flight or flights.
I got nothing so far as technically I voluntarily deboarded,
which is false, and I anticipate by the appropriate squawking,
she'll get more and I'll get something. Oh, also, we got put
in first class on today's nonstop to Munich.

I think that more will come of this; I hope that anything
you hear further about this will be on the Web; if not,
I'll tell you the story here when I get back, maybe.

Pickled Mixed Vegetables with Turmeric (Atjar tjampur kuning)
cat: Indonesian, United Airlines, partial recipe
servings: 8

h - Add the following to the mixed vegetable relish ingredients
2 Tb turmeric
1/4 c ground nuts (cashew or macademian)
1 Tb chopped garlic
1 Tb vegetable oil

Heat the oil and fry turmeric, garlic and nuts 3 min and add
to the vinegar mixture as in pickled mixed vegetables. When
the relish is to tangy add some more sugar. (for diabetics
substitute the sugar with a sweetener, after the mixture is cold)
