=============================
Hi Nancy,

NB> NB>> It makes a difference whether one gets something only once in a
NB> while NB>> or if one has to have it day-in-day-out for a week or
 NB> so... :) All

RH> That's why I don't like peanut butter--my folks fed it to us 9 out of
RH> 10 school lunches. Always the creamy stuff, usually with cheap grape
RH> jelly on white bread. Until Mom started working and could afford

NB> Thankfully we had more variety in our packed school lunches...

The odd day would be a slice of baloney (cheap stuff) or a piece of
"american cheese", never both on one sandwich, with mustard. Tuna fish
was a rare treat and egg salad usually at Easter time.

RH> sandwich bags, she'd wrap the sandwich in wax paper, putting a cookie
RH> on top of it before wrapping. By lunch time the cookie had sucked up
RH> water from the bread, making it soggy and a stale spot on the sandwich.
 RH> Bleah!

NB> Bleah, indeed! Did anyone ever try to suggest to her to wrap the
NB> cookie separately...? I might have asked if I could have it when I
NB> got home as an after-school snack... ;)

After school snacks were rare--some uears we could have an apple if the
trees had a decent crop. Nothing else was allowed. As for wrapping it
separate, she didn't want to use any more wax paper than she had to--"it
costs money, you know, and money doesn't grow on trees around here" was
the line of thought. When she switched to the fold over flap plastic
sandwich bags (a couple of years after she started working), she would
fold the flap in, put the cookie on the flap & then tuck the cuff.
Sometimes the cookie would slide off the flap & on to the sandwich but
it wasn't a consistant thing at least.

 NB> Re: potpies
RH> I'm experimenting with making my own, better than store bought ones.
RH> Biggest problem right now is how to keep the crust from sticking so
RH> tight to the casserole dish. I want it to stay in place for baking but
RH> we just about have to chip it off for serving. I suppose I could solve
RH> that with a double crust.................

NB> That would work. :) What about a non-stick spray like Pam (or
NB> whatever healthier equivalent there might be)...? Or lining the
 NB> casserole dish with tinfoil...?

I want it to stick some, just not quite as hard. Don't know if foil
would be a good option or no; we'd have to watch out for bit that might
come off. We still have some old amalgum fillings where it's not fun to
bite into a bit of foil. When the weather cools down a bit, I'll
experiment some more.

RH> We went thru a turkey hot dog spell for a while. They weren't bad,
RH> weren't great either but it was one way to fill up two growing kids
RH> on a junior enlisted paycheck.

NB> Sometimes you just do what you have to... :) Will the girls eat
NB> them nowadays, or are they like you with your peanut butter
 NB> avoidance...? ;)

The girls will eat them now; we didn't serve them nearly as often as my
folks served peanut butter. Besides, they're both raising kids who are
at the ages where hot dogs are still popular. Sometimes, if money was
really tight (end of the month, before pay day) I'd do hot dog stew for
supper--a can of vegetable soup, about half a can of water and several
hot dogs sliced up into it, then everything heated. Not gourmet but
filled the stomach. Even then, more often when Steve was in the field
than home as it was not a favorite of his. If we had some ground beef,
I'd sub that for the hot dogs from time to time, browning it and adding
a bit of onion as it browned before adding the soup & water. That was a
bit more adult appealing.

NB> ... Explosion Rocks Kitchen! Cat claims innocence!

Of course! Cat is always innocent (not!)
