=============================
Hi Nancy,

NB> NB>> Daddy was good at finding bargains on things... we'd get other
NB> cold NB>> cuts if he found them on sale... Turkey at Thanksgiving,

RH> Sounds like your dad had quite the eye for bargains.

NB> He did indeed... day-old bread and the bakery thrift stores, too...

My folks did that too, and I think they still do. They really began
doing so when they got a freezer. Unfortunately, they also get a lot of
stuff like doughnuts, coffee cakes, etc that aren't so good for them.

RH> Our turkeys were never used for sandwiches-- Mom used all she could
RH> for major meals and then made soup from the bones.

NB> We'd scavenge the bones for meat for more meals, too... Soup not so
NB> often, although I did do that myself when I was on my own... that may

I do it a lot! When Rachel was expecting Robert, we went to my sister's
for Thanksgiving (he was due about then). My sister was going to throw
out the carcase (she is not the super saver cook I am) so I asked if we
could have it. She agreed, and Rachel enjoyed the turkey soup I put in
her freezer a few days later.

NB> have been because soup requires a certain amount of keeping an eye on
NB> it while it simmers... and Mommy had her hands full watching kids
 NB> instead...

It's a get going and ignore for the most part with me. The longest part
of the work is deboning the carcase after it cooks for a couple of
hours. Then I let it cook a bit longer before adding veggies and rice or
noodles. If I use the latter, I'll scoop out what we'll eat at the first
meal and add the noodles to that part only. That way I can freeze the
rest of it without getting mushy noodles. My mom used to tell us to
watch out for bones; I do the same as it's inevitable some will slip
thru, no matter how carefully you pick thru them.

RH> Possibly; I'll do some experimenting once the weather cools off.
RH> Probably now it'll be a few biscuits scattered on the top to save the
RH> carbs. I'll have to do some checking out on how many carbs in the
RH> gravy, crust, potatoes, etc so I can have one without going over the
RH> suggested carbs per meal allottment.

NB> Too bad you aren't so keen on sweet potatoes, they pack a lower
NB> glycemic index so the carbs would be less of a load... ;)

Steve would like it; I would not. Just the thought of them in a pot pie
is not good eats IMO. I can pack it full enough of other veggies and
meat so as to use a minimal amount of gravy to bind it. And, if I do a
one crust pot pie, it'll be still lower in carbs.

RH> One year for Christmas, my dad gave my mom a bean pot. Bright idea out
RH> of that was that we had beans for supper (with a bit of salt pork) on
RH> th first Sunday of the month. A few years later, we got an ice cream
RH> maker so home made ice cream (usually vanilla) was added to the menu.
RH> That whole thing died some time before I went to college but I don't
RH> really remember when/why. I'm just as glad it did. (G)

NB> The novelty wore off pretty soon, did it...? :)

Very fast--faster for us kids than my parents I think. What wasn't so
great was having to go to school the next day while the beans were
working their way thru our systems. (G) I know Mom & Dad meant well and
wanted to save money--I appreciate it now but sure didn't at the time.

NB> NB>>> ... Explosion Rocks Kitchen! Cat claims innocence!
NB> RH>> Of course! Cat is always innocent (not!)
 NB> NB>> They'll always claim it, anyway... ;)

RH> The old "who, me? I think you've got the wrong person (animal) here"
 RH> syndrome.

NB> Cats and kids... ;) (Lots of adults, too... [g])

Dogs too; we've got a story about our cocker spaniel and my sister's
collie eating Christmas cookies...................................
