Swoosh indeed. I guess I can be a bit obscure at times.

I play this game on the Internet called Guess the City,
where someone posts an obscure photo, and people guess,
and when the guesses get too way far off base, the poster
posts clues, and I'm the current one (the city is Torre
del Lago, site of Puccini's last home and grave, and the
photo, taken by either me or Carol B., is of the feet of
the Puccini statue and the floral tribute before it), and
nobody has been guessing, so I e-mailed Lilli, and she
said that my photos and clues are too obscure even for
this lot.

That is correct. The Dems were ready to negotiate a peace
settlement between the Diem/Thieu guys and the Viet Cong,
and Nixon promised, at her urging, that RVN would get a
much better deal when the Pubs won the election. The Pubs
won, and Nixon reneged on his promise, and the RVN got,
in the end, nothing.

I didn't find her attractive, but I was not even adolescent
at the time - she seemed to be dragon-ladyish like my mother.
She got into a big fight with my father about the merits of
Chiang Kai-Shek (Jiang Jieshi) - she took the position that
he was the only hope for saving China from Communism, and he
said that he was just another warlord bent on pillaging the
country. I think in retrospect that both were right, but at
the time I took her side mostly (my grandfather on my mother's
side was in his cabinet).

Eggplant Parmigiana
cat: singapore, italy, main
servings: 6 to 8

2 lg eggs
45 g plain white flour
salt & pepper
2 eggplant, thinly sliced lengthways
4 Tb sunflower oil
600 ml tomato puree
60 g parmesan cheese, graded
1 bn basil
300 g mozzarella cheese, sliced

Preheat the oven to 160C/350F. Beat the eggs in a 
shallow bowl and season with salt & pepper. Put 
the flour on a plate. coat a slice of eggplant in 
the flour, shaking off the excess, then dip it 
into the egg and let the excess drip back into 
the bowl. Repeat with the remaining slices.

Heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium 
heat. Working in batches if necessary, fry the 
eggplant slices 5 min on each side or until 
golden. Drain well on kitchen paper, then continue 
until all slices are fried.

Layer the tomato puree, eggplant slices, Parmesan, 
basil leaves, and mozzarella in a shallow 
ovenproof serving dish. Continue layering until 
all the ingredients are used, finishing with a 
layer of tomato puree and the cheese on top.

Place the dish on a baking tray and bake 30 min 
or until the sauce is bubbling and the cheese has 
melted. Top with extra basil leaves and serve hot.
