Yes, I was thinking that smoke first, then heat is a good way to go.  If
I can get some red jalapenos, then I might just try some also.

Ouch!  I hope that there was no permanent damage.  If there was, you
might be able to reinforce it.  I think that if you have some thin
stainless steel that you could bend it into a U shape and place over the
location for the hinge with the base of the U where the hinge mounts.
Then tap it in so that the whole surface is flush.  You could attach the
hinge through that, and then use a machine screw and nut to go through
the legs of the U through the side to hold the reinforcement in place.
That would probably be less expensive than ordering a new box from
Masterbuilt.

We got home okay last night.  Mom is improving, but has a ways to go to
recover the language skills that were affected.
