I used to have a baseball card of him from when he warmed the
bench for the Reds, I think it was. He looked like an overstuffed
gerbil even then, not that I am not above making fun of someone
for his appearance. Okay, he had the brain of an overstuffed
gerbil even then.

I think he cared how many. Two hits and how many misses?

So he hogs the plate, the pitchers want to take control
of the plate. It's a natural battle. I take a laissez-faire
attitude and figure (as did most umpires and fans in baseball
history) that brushbacks are fine, though attacks with the
purpose of injuring are not. Same with football - hard hits,
even to the degree forbidden nowadays, okay; New Orleans
Saints' style tackles with the aim to maim, not so much.

Of course, some of me thinks, let it all hang out, let them
do whatever they want, complete with TV closeups of splashes
of blood on the uniforms, especially if it's Yankee blood or
(ugh) Dodger blue. But then careers will be shorter and the
social security disability rolls longer.

All of me thinks, though, let them use all the steroids they
can get away with. It doesn't hurt me and enhances the
spectacle, and the athletes should be allowed to enhance or
ruin their bodies however they see fit.

It's a harking back to the olden days when men were men
and heads were wooden. Ted Williams, for example, hit
.420 and .406 while having pitches aimed at his head
every day. Ty Cobb hit in the .400s numerous times while
having pitches aimed at his head every at-bat - of course
if he got plonked, the chance of the pitcher's being injured
was higher than that of his.

 Especially the Yankees.  Does Joe have enough

I don't think it's especially the Yankees. It's every
frontrunner and every star.

With that intro I was expecting Carol Bryant or Paula Deen,
to be frank.

Zesty cheese straws
cat: starter, easy, southern
yield: 60

1/2 c butter, at room temperature
2 c shredded sharp Cheddar, at room temperature
1 1/2 c all-purpose flour
1 ts salt
1/4 ts cayenne pepper

Directions

Preheat the oven to 300F.

In a food processor, add the butter, cheese, flour, salt, and
cayenne and process until a smooth dough is formed. Scoop it
into a cookie press, fitted with a flat ridged tip. Pipe the
dough in 2" strips onto a lightly greased cookie sheet.
(Alternatively, refrigerate the dough 30 min and roll on a
lightly floured surface into a 1/4" thick rectangle. Cut into
smaller rectangles, about 2x3", with a pizza wheel or sharp
knife.) Bake for 10 to 15 min or until lightly browned. Remove
to racks to cool.
