Having never been to Sicily, I have no reason not to believe them.

I do know that North American tomatoes have become less acid and
therefore taste sweeter over the years even if the sugar content
didn't go up, to the point where authorities recommend pressure
canning over hot water baths as there is now insufficient acid in
most commercial varieties to prevent botulism in canned tomatoes.

I don't believe I have ever had one, similar things perhaps but not
so named, but they look easy enough to make.

Getting back to preserving tomatoes, sun dried tomatoes are safe,
easy and flavour packed...

     Title: GHF Leg Of Lamb Pinwheels
Categories: Grill, Lamb
  Servings: 4

    1/4 c  balsamic vinegar 
    1/2 c  red wine vinegar 
      1 c  olive oil 
      1 ts salt 
      1 ts pepper 
    1/2 ts ground cumin 
      1 ts ground coriander 
      2    cloves garlic, chopped 
    1/2 lb feta cheese
    1/2 c  sun-dried tomatoes 
      1 c  fresh spinach, washed, stems
           removed, leaves julienned
      4    cloves chopped garlic or
      1    mashed roast whole garlic 
      1 bn mint, julienned 
      2 lb butterflied leg of lamb
      1    egg 
      1 ts ground coriander 
           Kitchen twine 

For marinade, place olive oil in bowl, then whisk in red wine and
balsamic vinegars, followed by spices. Place leg of lamb in a bowl
or pan with marinade for 1.5 to 3 hours, turning once. 

For the lamb pinwheels' stuffing, combine sun-dried tomatoes,
chopped garlic, mint, egg and coriander in a bowl and fold together.

Open leg of lamb, pat dry, and season with salt, pepper and
coriander. Spread stuffing over lamb. Place spinach over stuffing.
Roll leg of lamb like a jelly roll. Tie lamb with twine: starting at
one end, circle rolled lamb and tie. Tie full length with individual
ties approximately 1-1/2 inches apart. Slice individual wheels
between ties, careful not to cut strings. Season individual wheels
with salt, pepper and coriander. 

Preheat grill to high and spray pinwheels with cooking spray. Note:
wheels are fragile; a light spray will keep wheels from sticking but
allow browning. Place wheels on high heat, turning it down after
wheels are placed. Grill 7 to 9 minutes. Turn very carefully
(holding wheels between two spatulas if needed). Grill another 5 to
6 minutes or till desired doneness. After 2 to 3 minutes, sprinkle
with feta cheese, then top with more when fully cooked. 

Serve Lamb, pizza and grilled spinach together.
