Ärende: FUEL COST 01017
========================
-=> Quoting Dave Drum to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> Thanks for supplying those figures. The heat values of the alcohols
GJ> do not exactly reflect the fuel consumption of optimised engines, as
GJ> their higher octane rating allows a higher compression ratio to be
GJ> used than with gasoline (petrol), which increases the engine's thermal
 GJ> efficiency.

DD> Errrrmmmmm .... they do insofar as the BTU figures reflect the amount
DD> of heat (work) which may be extracted per quantity of fuel. It is up to
 DD> the engineering
DD> department to optimise the equipment to use those potentials to their
 DD> maximum.

The practical result for the motorist of being able to design an
engine with a higher compression ratio for ethanol is that it can
partly compensate for the lower BThU value of the fuel, so the MPG is
not as bad as he get if he just used a high ethanol fuel in a fixed CR
multi-fuel engine.

GJ> The most fun part of my government work in PNG during the 1980s was
GJ> setting up and supervising a research facility for "Alternative
GJ> Fuels". Toyota gave us two E98 Starlets to run for 2 years, we bought
GJ> a Brazilian VW beetle (which had to be converted to right hand
 GJ> steering),

DD> Whatever for? Why didn't they do as is done here where there are a
DD> number of RHD vehicles in everyday use - even though the US drives, as
DD> does the majority of the world, on the right side of the road. Among
DD> these are postal service delivery vehicles, old London diesel taxis,
DD> ancient Rolls Canardlys and Bentleys which would have their collector
DD> value compromised by a switch to left
DD> hand steering. It simply requires a bit more attention to the world
DD> around one and some extra caution when overtaking.

The beetle was used by several Departmental drivers, and PNG drivers
are not renowned for cautious driving. I wanted that car to be given
the best chance of survival. There are certain vehicles used here,
such as "pick-up" garbage trucks, weed sprayers and road sweepers with
LHD, but they also have RHD, so that the driver can drive in traffic.

A few private cars owned by collectors have LHD, but have to carry
signs to make other road users aware of that. Their appearance in
traffic can be disconcerting, if other drivers see the person in the
"driver's" seat apparently reading a newspaper while mixed in with
other vehicles. And there was the case of a LHD car stopped at night
by the cops for a random breath test, and the person in the right hand
seat was given the breathalyser, blowing over the limit...

DD> Really a bitch to clean up after - when that happens.
GJ> That is an experience that I am happy to have missed. The smell of a
GJ> dirt-track bike running on methanol, lubricated with castor oil,
GJ> however, is one of the most exciting aroma memories of my younger days.

DD> Rudge, JAP, Velocette or ESO? 500c single purpose motorcycles on a
 DD> short cinder
DD> track are quite exciting to watch. When actually racing on such a
 DD> set-up one is
DD> too busy to be either frightened or excited. Bv))=

In the immediate post-war period many of the bikes raced were pre-war
Rudges, Douglases, "pea-shooter" Harleys. Then came a few converted
road bikes, then the later JAPs and Czech bikes. Sidecar outfits were
based on Brough, Harley, and I remember a 4 cylinder Indian. Then
came Vincents and built-up units with Vee-twin JAP engines. A friend
of mine was a side-car passenger; apart from that, he seemed fairly
normal, although I know he couldn't have been.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

      Title: The Rum Sidecar
 Categories: Alcohol, Beverages
      Yield: 1 servings

  1 1/2 oz Golden rum
3/4 oz Cointreau or other triple
           Sec
    3/4 oz Fresh-squeezed lemon juice

This month's Saveur, where a writeup of a new Cruzan Single Barrel Rum
casually mentioned that it would be "delicious in a sidecar." A rum
sidecar? An honest sidecar is built from cognac, triple sec and lemon
juice. Then I found a recipe by cocktail authority Dave Wondrich in
Esquire, which meant that maybe there was something to be said for
  this variation on a classic.

So is this a classic coctkail? It certainly follows the classic
formula. Like the margarita or the dacquiri, it has three
parts--booze, citrus, and sweet, which are carefully balanced to
achieve cocktail greatness. The daiquiri is rum, lime juice, and
simple syrup; the margarita replaces the rum with tequila and the
simple syrup with triple sec. The sidecar is much the same, with
brandy, lemon juice, and triple sec.

And it turns out rum makes a pretty great substitute for the brandy,
softening the drink and making it a little sweeter. It's also a lot
  cheaper!

Rum Sidecar, Adapted from Dave Wondrich

In a cocktail shaker combine the ingredients with cracked ice and
shake vigorously, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass with its
rim rubbed with lemon lemon juice then dipped into sugar.
