We had but the one child, but had a succession of other people also
living with us.  The peak was when there was a family of four plus
another single male adult added to our three... sometimes some of them
paid into the food budget, sometimes not at all.

When we had a good salary coming in, things were much better. 
Thankfully we mostly continued to live as though they weren't though, so
that when that ended we weren't as strapped as many in otherwise similar
situations... I'll agree that with the higher prices there generally
came an increased ability to pay those prices based on wages... and also
that those of us on a fixed income see things a little less rosily..  ;0

My feelings precisely.

Only one I've ever found that I could tolerate the taste of was one made
of canola oil, and it costs more than butter.  I still buy it for my
lactose intolerant friend, but I stay with the real thing.
