===============
Hi Hap,

->  HN> I'm not sure if I remember a time when
-> HN> my mom was not working.

-> I should have said "worked outside of the home" because for years she
-> gathered the "Local and Personal" news from the community for the
-> newspaper Dad worked on. But, since she did it while I was in school

 HN> My mom did both, when I was young
 HN> my dad was a lower enlisted man with
 HN> 4 kids and a wife...we were below

My dad did a lot of professional photography work for years in addition
to what he shot for the paper. He did weddings, liquor licenses, all
sorts of stuff to suppliment his newspaper salary. Of course he had to
spend hours in the dark room too, developing and printing.

 HN> the poverty level by most measurements

We were too, but us kids weren't as aware of it.

 HN> as this was LONG before military pay
 HN> got anywhere close to civilian equality.

We were on food stamps for almost a year before Stve went active. A
PFC's pay was a raise for us.

 HN> So Mom worked where she could and Pop
 HN> often took side jobs as well when he
 HN> was not flying off somewhere. I
 HN> think my favorite job of his was as
 HN> a projector operator at a drive in
 HN> movie (not sure where it was as I
 HN> was really young). Mom would load us
 HN> all into the station wagon (we always
 HN> had a station wagon) with quilts and

We had station wagons until some time after my youngest sister left
home. Steve's family had a number of them as well.

 HN> such and we'd go to the movies. Pop

Sounds like fun; Steve has talked abotu going to drive ins but I've
never been to one (except in the day time when it was a flea market, in
Jacksonville, NC).

 HN> would start the projector and then
 HN> come down and see us while it ran.
 HN> I got to see tons of cartoons that
 HN> way (grin).

Who's your favorite character?

-> Red soup--as Rachel named it years ago. (G) We've switched away from
-> Campbell's and gone with various organic ones, Annie's makes a good one.
-> I might try making my own while tomatoes are still in season now that
-> we're having some cool weather.

 HN> When I'm sick it's Campbells, for sure
 HN> when I'm well I'll make it from scratch
 HN> and often add fresh basil to it as well.

I don't like the HFCS they think it needs. IIRC, one of the recipes I
have for making it also calls for fresh basil.

-> And cheese is carb free! (G)

 HN> Yeah, but it's higher in sodium
 HN> and if you get the right cheeses
 HN> higher in fat as well! Last night
 HN> Annie and I shared a very nice
 HN> double creme brie on soy crackers.
 HN> Sooo good!

Drooling...........................

-> HN> With our needs actually getting smaller
->  HN> I'm not sure a big dishwasher would
-> HN> "pay" a smallish chest freezer on
->  HN> the other hand.....

-> I think you would appreciate a dishwasher. Just think, you may be having
-> grand kids some day..........................BTW, how is Amanda doing
-> with her job, still in Sacramento?

 HN> It would be a "nicety" but not a
 HN> necessity, and if the budget can
 HN> allow it it might manage to get
 HN> in...but it would require extra
 HN> plumbing as well....

Find out how much the extra plumbing would cost to be done at the same
time as the rest of the kitchen work. Then you would have it in place
for when you decide to put a dishwasher in.

Catch you later,
Ruth
