The trends seem to indicate an inverse price relationship with the
distance from the durian plantation times the seasonal production in
units per day.  There is also a special factor applied to sales made
to tourists residing in luxury hotels, as distinct from those made to
locals out in the street, picking their fruit from the piles on the
footpath.  If the latter are travelling in a local company vehicle
they get their durians cheaper than if they are in a taxi.  My
cheapest ones, in Sumatra, were for 5 fruit, eaten by 4 of us; a
memorable feast!  We were satiated.

Most durians are special events for me.  It took me over a year from
when I first smelled durian in a non-airconditioned taxi in
Jogyakarta, to when I first braved eating one in Lae, PNG.  I then
regretted all that lost time.

Yesterday Kevin and I finished off a large Monthong, but Kevin only
had a small part of it, as his diabetes doctor had told him that
durian was not recommended.

I have discovered a new diet food.  It is chicken liver in coconut.

I made it up last week, and it tasted good, but there was a lot of it,
so I only ate some, for the first 3 days, leaving it out of the fridge
for some hours.  On the 4th day it smelt a "bit funny", but not all
_that_ bad, so I finished it.  The next 3 days I didn't feel hungry,
so only ate a bit of toast each day.  I spent a lot of time seated,
catching up on my magazine reading, while my digestive system dealt
with what I had given it.  The next day I was back to normal, but I
had lost 2 kg.  A 1/2 kg came back when I began eating again, but no
more.  If it does, I could go on the diet again...

      Title: Chicken Livers Indonesian Style
 Categories: Chicken, Indonesian
      Yield: 6 Servings
 
      3 tb Butter
      1    Onion; chopped
      1    Clove garlic; minced
    1/2 ts Chili powder
      1 lb Chicken livers
      1 c  Coconut milk
    1/4 c  Almonds; ground
      1 tb Lemon rind; grated
      2 tb Fresh lemon juice
    1/2 ts Salt
 
  Melt butter, add onion, garlic and chili powder, and saute 5 minutes,
  stirring frequently. Add livers and saute for  five minutes, until
  livers are cooked through, but still pink inside. Add remaining
  ingredients and simmer over low heat for 10 minutes, stirring
  occasionally.
