====================================================================
Aloha Ruth!
->
-> -> HN> there's lots you can do with photography!
->
-> -> Yes, and every time the fire siren went off, he was out the door,
with
a
-> -> camera. He still keeps a scanner going for the police, fire, rescue
-> -> squad calls. Can't hear them unless the volume is cranked up tho.
->
-> HN> I never got into "stringing" for any of the
-> HN> local papers, did do product photography, catalog
-> HN> work and even some assignments for Sunset magazine
->  HN> once in a while.
-> HN> And of course every now and then I'd get roped
->  HN> into doing a wedding.
->
-> Dad wasn't just a stringer; he worked for the paper full time plus. He'd
-> go back in to work on Monday & Tuesday nights; Wednesdays he'd be home
-> only after it was all wrapped up/printed & Thursdays he'd be in early to
-> distribute (drive around to various locations/towns & fill boxes).
->
He wasn't but I was not working for any
newspaper once I got out of college
and stringing was/is common on most
daily papers. Weeklys are another matter
entirely. Usually they press someone
(read that as anyone with a camera
and skills to use it)into doing both
writing and photo...everything. Two
"people" for one paycheck.

-> ->  HN> We probably qualified, but I don't think
-> -> HN> they even had a food stamp program in
-> ->  HN> the 50's. Anne and I qualified when I
->
-> -> I'm not sure when it started, probably in the"War on Poverty" of the
-> -> 60s.
->
-> HN> Don't really know, when, and one month
-> HN> of them made me feel bad, so we never went
->  HN> to get a second month's stamps...let families
-> HN> with kids and greater need have em.
->
-> We didn't really want them but had no choice. Worst part was when we got
-> 15 pounds of free government cheese. Wouldn't have been bad had it been
-> real cheese but we got the velveeta plastic cheezoid stuff. Couldn't
-> freeze it so we used it as fast as we could and never got more.
->
When you gotta do what you gotta do.

-> -> HN> beans and rice. Pay the bills first
-> ->  HN> and eat on what's left.
->
-> -> We had nothing left after paying bills and had 2 young girls to feed.
-> -> Even with them we ate a lot of beans and rice, home made "whatevers"
-> -> soup, etc. I was able to stretch a penny into copper wire. (G)
->
-> HN> If you need em you need em...we qualified
-> HN> but did not feel like we "needed" them as
-> HN> we could get by with out them.
->
-> We wouldn't have gone on them except for needing to feed the kids.
-> Otherwise we would have tightened our belts a bit more and had more rice
-> & beans, beans & rice.
->
Yep, that's what Anne and I did...but we did
not have any kidlets at that point.
Easier to tighten your own belt..harder
to tighten your child's.

-> -> -> We had station wagons until some time after my youngest sister
left
-> -> -> home. Steve's family had a number of them as well.
->
-> ->  HN> Common sense..most room for the
-> ->  HN> most "cargo".
->
-> -> Yes, and no such thing as a mini van then. When we were car shopping
for
-> -> the first time after we got married, my folks advised Steve & me to
get
-> -> a station wagon. We ended up with the Honda Civic CVCC wagon--you
should
-> -> have seen the look on their faces when they saw it! I just said
"well,
-> -> you told us to get a station wagon and we did................".
->
-> HN> Did you wash it and it shrunk?? Grin
->
-> No, did that with the Swiss Army knives we got. Steve & I each have a
-> full size and a smaller one; I keep my small one in my purse (most of
-> the time).
->
I have several of those as well. I have
an antique swiss army knife (from the
60's) that is still fully functional.

-> ->  HN> Ah you don't know what you're missing!
->
-> -> I do know, from what I've read/heard. Nearest drive in was an hour
away,
-> -> local theater was maybe a mile. Besides, until my dad's boss sold the
-> -> theater, he'd let employees and families get in free. We saw quite a
few
-> -> movies that way; no popcorn or soda (had to save money) tho. That
ended
-> -> about the time I finished 6th grade.
->
-> HN> free movies is good!
->
-> Very good, especially with 5 kids in our family.
->
-> -> -> Who's your favorite character?
->
-> ->  HN> Probably Popeye the Sailor.
-> ->  HN> Wouldn't that be obvious! (grin)
->
-> -> I'm not surprised; I think I've always been partial to the Road
Runner.
-> -> That southwest thing, you know. (G)
->
-> HN> My pop liked the road runner too.
->  HN> And Deputy Dawg.
->
-> Used to be a lot of good ones, not like today. Kids today need to watch
-> the old cartoons to see quality work and "clean" characters.
->
I loved a lot of the artwork on some
of the oldies...and Popeye in particular.

-> ->  HN> Don't like the HFCS...but when
-> ->  HN> I'm sick I don't wanna stand over
-> -> HN> the stove making from scratch either!
->
-> -> That's where the freezer would come in handy, make the soup while
you're
-> -> feeling good & freeze a stash. Then all you have to do is pull it out
-> -> and nuke it.
->
->  HN> It would.
->
-> Add that to the plus side of the list.............
->
-> -> -> time as the rest of the kitchen work. Then you would have it in
place
-> -> -> for when you decide to put a dishwasher in.
->
-> -> HN> Not just extra plumbing, but extra
-> -> HN> electrical wiring as well, and
-> -> HN> space to fit it all too.
-> -> HN> Still it's an idea we will discuss
-> ->  HN> when the time comes...as Anne keeps
-> ->  HN> pointing out; "we aren't getting ANY
-> ->  HN> younger."
->
-> -> Do all the pre work while the kitchen is torn up. Anne has a good
point
->

My good point is often found on the
top of my head! (grin)
chat with you soon!
