Ärende: Another Ithaca Farmer's Market [1]
====================================================================
Hi Janis,

Typing one handed but the wrist is fixed. Now I have to let it heal so I
can get on with projects.

>> Exactly.. That's certainly happened to me in Louisville at a Korean
>> restaurant. It was wonderful that the cook insisted on fixing me
>> another dish with food that wasn't as hot as that initial one. He
>> refused to accept any extra $$ for that as well.

JK> > Nice of him but if you came back, it was worth it for him.

JK> Certainly, especially given the size of that tiny restaurant. :)

Tiny places can put out great food. We call them "hole in the wall"
places; our favorite Korean one in Hawaii was one of that tpye.

 JK> >Most of the
JK> > time a meal like that will start out OK but the heat builds as I
JK> keep > eating it. Most times I'll make it thru, sometimes tho, I've
JK> had to push > it away.

JK> Same here ... so that's why I try not to order things extra hot (by my
 JK> standards at least).

I'll try to get an idea of the place's definitions of the heat levels.
But, as I found with salsas, one place's medium could be defined as hot
to some or mild to others.

>> Same here.. we avoid it in anything that lists it. In 2010, the corn
>> industry tried to get the FDA to approve the name "corn sugar" for
>> HFCS, but the Corn industry was turned down. If I see anything that
>> looks like, I don't buy it.

JK> > The corn industry is getting too powerful, glad this idea got shot
 JK> down.

JK> Oh they'll think of something.. they have to do something with all the
 JK> genetically modified corn they're growing :( :( eek. I keep thinking
JK> in time you won't be able to find any corn that is "plain" corn. Sad
JK> because even though it's one of my allergies, I love it.

Steve gets migraine headaches if he has too much at a time. A few weeks
ago we bought 3 ears at the local farmer's market, a 4th was thrown in.
As Steve was helping with "tear down", he was given 4 more ears of corn.
We had one each that day & the next. Took a couple days off, then had an
ear each, the next 2 days and no migraines for Steve. But, we're done
with fresh corn for the season.

>>> Ever try it without sugar? I haven't put up pickles in a long time so
>> > I don't recall off the top of my head what I used; the recipes came
>> from > the 2010 Ball Blue book.

>> Think I have that one here.. I'll have to see. Might be from an
>> earlier year though.

JK> > Should be the same basic recipies tho.

JK> Yeah.. still digging and digging through boxes of books :) That
 JK> doesn't help much hehe

Been there, done that too many times to count.

>> > Yes, and some things (like peaches) you can use light, medium or
>> heavy > syrup. I generally use light or extra light.

>> You mean say, purchased canned peaches? I've seen some recipes to can
>> peaches using grape juice, haven't tried that though.

JK> > No, home canned peaches. I put up 13 pints last year in extra light
JK> > syrup before I knew I was diabetic. We're still eating them.

JK> Sure, understand. Must have tasted great though .. :(

They do--fresh from an Amish market and last summer was a good one for
peaches.

>> Two mortgages:

JK> Some windows we left as is (with storms).. helped keep the heat out.

JK> > One of the first things my folks bought when Mom started working was
JK> > aluminum combo screens/storm doors & windows. You just slide the
JK> proper > panel into place; they're still on the house now some 45
JK> years later. > Beat wrestling those heavy storm windows and screens.

JK> Yeah, I can understand that one :) This house is great. He's got new
JK> windows in every window.. easy to open, switch up screens/storms. I
JK> really love this place :)

We'll get up to see it some time, not sure when tho.

 JK> [fracking water lol]
>> But if it goes through in the Broome county area, the house in Windsor
>> could sold to a business (which is what I expect will happen). Not a
>> fracking company per se.. but maybe as a rental for employees, that
>> kind of thing.

JK> > That's one good use for it--either a big family or lots of singles
JK> could > share it. It might get sub divided into apartments again; you
JK> did have > the extra downstairs kitchen IIRC.

JK> There were 4 kitchens in this house when we bought it, 2 upstairs and
JK> 2 downstairs. One upstairs was a very small one, but all the
JK> electrical and plumbing is still up there. We took the appliances
JK> out, and my daughter used that room for her dining room.. without the
JK> appliances, it is quite a large room. Monster house really.. 4
JK> kitchens, 4 bathrooms.. the previous owner had used it as a bed and
JK> breakfast for a while until she found out that the insurance would
JK> have been very very high if she was doing the cooking as she'd
 JK> planned.

Still, it was a nice house. Makes the place we are in now look tiny
(we've got 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths, about 1000 square feet), which it
is. (G)

>> The house was only on the market a few weeks when we found
>> it.

JK> > Making the previous owner surprised and happy that it sold as fast
 JK> as it > did.

JK> No doubt :) but property in Ithaca goes extremely fast.. it always
JK> has. I'm sure that's because of Cornell University.

Probably, same as housing in Chapel Hill or Durham because of UNC-CH and
Duke.

JK> > Got your kitchen up to steam yet?

JK> Right now, we're so busy with work and 'stuff' ;) We brought over the
JK> pot rack from Windsor yesterday, and I'll get a smaller one for the
JK> Windsor kitchen. I always felt the one that was in Windsor was too
JK> big for the Center Island there we built..so a smaller one will be
JK> better.. maybe just a different shape, not necessarily smaller if you
JK> know what I mean. The rectangular shape of the stainless one we
JK> brought over from Windsor will go well over the center island with
JK> dishwasher/butcher block top Ron is building now in Slaterville
JK> Springs.. will be nice when done :)

We found a pot rack at a thrift shop a couple of years ago. It's been
nice--lets us hang most of the pots, freeing up cabinet space for other
stuff. Only problem is, have to make sure we don't "clonk" our heads on
hanging pots. (G)
