This new setup of mine lost my writeup of the front of
this trip, and here I am redoing it.

Having been pleased by my last visit, I decided to
investigate Sam & Harry's again. The place was singularly
quiet for a weekday noon, a couple tables occupied, a
couple patrons at the bar, no staff in sight. Nobody
behind the bar. I told the host I'd sit there, but he
apparently made no move to tell anyone I or any customer
was there. It became apparent that a staff meeting was
happening in the back (fairly chummy from the sound
of occasional laughter), but why it was still going at
lunchtime is anyone's guess. I decided to give them 10
minutes. At just about the 10 mark, a bartender came up,
introduced himself in a cheesy tip-seeking way, and at
length took my order. I'd heard not so good things about
the seafood (mostly lamenting that this was no longer Legal
Seafoods), but for some reason wasn't in a steaky mood,
so I ordered the mussels, hoping for a good portion for
the hefty $12, and a large Sam, which before was a bargain
at $7 for 22 oz. Well, the large Sam was a couple ounces
short of advertised, and the mussels, when they came, no
bargain - 19 little ones with a few empties, in a fairly
decent broth flavored with cheap wine and much butter
and chopped fresh garlic. I didn't know if this was a
generous dozen and half or a defective two dozen;
anyhow, not a generous serving, quite a bit less than
what Legal would have offered. The broth cried out for
bread: but the basket came with two sad reheated rolls.
It is not a crime nor rocket science to reheat rolls -
you dip them lightly in water, wrap them in a napkin or
a paper bag, and shove in the oven for a few minutes.
These had been bathed heavily and then underreheated, so
they were warm, steamy, and grossly mushy on the bottom
to the point of falling apart. I didn't need the carbs
anyway, but I'd rather it had been my choice. Lunch was
affordable and not offensive, but if this had not been
preceded by that rather nice meal I'd not be thinking to
come back here for a long time if at all. But thanks to
that other lunch I'll return someday and order another
steak, which at $2/oz including two relatively delicious
sides is probably one of the great bargains among US
airport meals. Given the budget alternatives of Five
Guys in the north pier and Fuddrucker's in the next
pier down, the congresscritters and such are relatively
blessed.
