For that price I could have had a fine meal with wine, two semi-fine
meals with beer, 5 burger meals with Coke, or 27 burger meals at
home, even with the food prices being grossly high - higher by
probably 20% than at the beginning of the year.

When I arrived a couple days ago there was this smell of corpse,
and I figured, oh geez, now he's gone and done it. But it turned
out just to have been some rotting ground beef and a piece of
cantaloupe leftover from months ago in the fridge, whose cooling
he's turned low to save money.

Today I was sitting at breakfast (leftover roast beef, not
breakfast food!), and he walked past 4 times and didn't notice
me (not didn't acknowledge me, that would have been different).
Thank goodness I'm heading to the airport in an hour or two.
But, durn burn, I have to return.

Couple weeks ago I was in Mary's House, a presumably made-up
place of pilgrimage where the Virgin Mary was supposed to have
spent her last years. Hordes of Christians. No security. That
would have been a ripe place for an attack. Or the Hagia Sophia,
packed with tourists. Well, luckily there wasn't any kind of
incident. The Topkapi Palace, the Kempinski Hotel, and the Museum
of Islamic Science and Technology all had metal detectors, though.

About Mary's - early this century, a nun in Germany started having
vivid dreams about the life of St. Mary. Most people thought she
was off her rocker, but the story was novelized by an interested
journalist. Years later, some Turkish priests read the novel and,
intrigued, went to the only place they knew of whose description
fit - a mountainside near Selcuk. Excavations yielded the foundation
of a 1st century building and some other corroborative artifacts.
And in the last couple decades, the site has become a must-stop on
the religious trail, same as places like Lourdes. There's a weeping
wall whose water is supposed to have healing properties (this now
has been enhanced by plumbing and spigots), and you can go into
the house of the Blessed Virgin, now reconstructed in the form of
a little chapel, where Mass is said daily for the salvation of
your soul. When I was there about two weeks ago, there were
hundreds of German tourists with smatterings of Italians, Japanese,
Americans, and various others. The largish parking lot was utterly
crammed with buses.

Lilli and I rented a cave last week. Look up Kelebek Sultan
Cave Suites and see what we got for a hundred bucks a night
per person. Room 301. The bathroom was the size of some smaller
hotel rooms, and my bedroom, just to preserve propriety, was 
fifty feet from hers. It was a big cave.
