In the interest of aviation security, these guys lie and lie
and lie, supposedly so that the bad guys don't know what
they're up against. No matter that the good guys don't know
what they're up against, either, that's collateral damage.
Or is it part of the master plan, as my more suspicious
associates might suggest?

I figure that if a terrorist were to be spotted it would be
front page news. All we get, though, are tales of hapless
misfits who have dreams of blowing up things but can't buy
explosives except from or with help from undercover agents;
that and domestic loonies from Utah, you could look it up.

The mechanics' hangars are mostly pretty opaque to us and are
besides located in places like China and Mexico.

Luckily the Airbus and Boeing engineers are clever enough to
have made provisions for even a badly maintained craft to stay
airworthy.

As I take a trip a week, minimum, the statistics favor my
being burned periodically; this was just a particularly
perfect storm.

When Continental took United over this year it forced its
antiquated methods and computer systems on the bigger airline.
Things that would have been a mere bagatelle have turned into
large messy awful incidents. I've had three on the new United
this year, all contributed to by computer foulups and staff
incompetency. These resulted in unplanned overnight stays in
places I didn't want to be, three free Hilton nights, and a
total of $1600 unnecessary expense to the airline including
$1200 in outright cash compensation to Lilli. Luckily trial
toes in the water on American and Delta have been unpleasant
enough that I don't yet see the necessity of defecting.

That's why you get the coupons when flying intercontinentally,
avoiding the Mad Dog and turpentine. Though I did find that the
free pour on American was a bit better than what I get on United
nowadays; the reverse used to be the case, but now the Continental
standard obtains.

1 1/2 oz Woodford Reserve Bourbon
3/4 oz dark creme de cacao
1/2 oz hazelnut liqueur

Shake with ice and strain into a chilled martini glass.
