she's comfy and happy, that's the most important thing.

Good choice, I'd say.

It was said that doing the puzzle and other brain-boosting
tasks is a key to avoiding dementia. I suppose that stopping
might be a symptom of something. Speaking of which, I find
that I am no longer able to do the NYT Saturday puzzle with
any degree of facility, though the Sunday one still usually
takes under two hours (at my best, 45-60 minutes was average).

Has anyone actually come out and told him that they
notice that it's wearing him out? And to chill a bit?

After trying out the brining thing a few times, I've
gone back to my old ways of rubbing salt into the
breasts and thighs. Does the trick and is less messy.

FALL ONIONS WITH GINGERY CIDER SAUCE
cat: fall, onions
Makes: 4 servings

4 lg onions (about 8 oz each)
3 Tb apple jelly
2 Tb spicy mustard
1 Tb grated ginger root
1 Tb cider vinegar
1 Tb cornstarch
1 c apple cider

Trim and peel onions; halve crosswise and place in 1 1/2 qt
round baking dish. Add 1" of water, cover dish with lid or
transparent wrap and nuke at high power for 20 min, rotating
dish once, or until fork-tender. Meanwhile, combine apple
jelly, mustard, ginger root, vinegar, and cornstarch in
saucepan, stirring with wire whip until blended. Stir in cider
and cook, stirring over med heat, until sauce is thickened and
comes to a boil. Drain onions and serve with sauce to
accompany baked ham, roast pork, or turkey.
