===================
Hi Nancy,

RH> We have a scale at home and donated one to the church kitchen.
RH> Otherwise it's just eyeballing and that is a lot less than accurate.

NB> Unless it's something that you have regularly enough that the portion
 NB> is engrained... :)

Still working on that, the eye hasn't fully adjusted size portions for
everything. A good number of things, yes, but still many more portions
are better done by weight.

RH> But, my primary care doctor reduced the Lantus from 18 units down
RH> to 10 last week and thinks that I might be able to go off it at some
RH> point. I just have to keep up with the carb watching tho.

NB> Good news. If/when the pancreas kicks in well, you might be able to
NB> be a little less careful with carbs, too... just be alert to how
NB> things are reacting... Probably have to keep checking your BG
 NB> readings,
 NB> though.

That's been our thoughts. I'll probably always keep a watchful eye on
the carbs and check my BG readings daily, even if I can give up the
insulin.

NB> tasty. NB>> Has some slivers of ginger in it, and a little
NB> jalapeno... I always NB>> make sure none of those are left behind at

RH> Like Steve always makes sure the garlic is not in the liquid after the
RH> kosher dill pickles are used up. He also gets the garlic from the
RH> dilled green beans and the heart from a bunch of celery.

NB> Some things are just too good to let them be wasted... :)

It's just my little routine to save those bits for him as a special
treat. A little spoiling that doesn't hurt him, calorically.

NB> NB>> Depending on how much she is aware of what is happening around
NB> her, NB>> she might not be affected too badly. If he were to be
 NB> there with her,

RH> At home she still thinks she has to do what she did for so many years.
RH> Dad has to really be aware to intercept her from trying to do what she
RH> isn't supposed to and suggest she do something else (like setting the
RH> table). Removal from the familiar home environment would be a big help
RH> there; she wouldn't have the familiarity of her own kitchen (even tho
RH> she's not allowed to cook) where she knows where things are.

NB> So you are seeing good benefits from moving from the home... but the
NB> flip side of course is that not having the familiarity of her own home
NB> (including the kitchen) might make her mental state even worse...

There's always that potential. Did talk to her (on the phone, no skype)
yesterday and she did pretty well, once I told her who I was. Repeated
herself a few times but was able to give me some family news.

RH> I know, and he needs the help. If she falls, he can't get her up by
RH> himself but in an assisted living, the help would be just steps away
RH> instead of who knows how long.

NB> So that would be all a good thing, from his standpoint... except for
NB> the losing the familiar, as well... And being together would help the
NB> mental state for both. :)

Seems that would work out the best for them. Dad would be able to care
for Mom but have ready assistance and relief as needed.

NB> by their getting an aide in the NB>> house to help with care. They
NB> added to their house to give our
NB> NB>> parents a place of their own, yet somewhat connected... :)

RH> None of us have the place to do anything like that. All of my siblings
RH> have their own homes; we rent (for now, don't know what the future
RH> will be). Some could be adapted but in the long run, it's probably
RH> better if my folks were in assisted living, mostly for the skilled care
RH> for Mom (and eventually Dad).

NB> Not everybody can do it. And it is a big investment in time/energy
NB> once the parents do require more skilled care. Daddy was able to stay
 NB> home
NB> until his last hospital stay (and even then, his passing was
NB> unexpected) because Lydia & Steve and their kids pitched in to provide
NB> care and they were able to have an aide come in for a number of hours
NB> every day. But, that solution isn't a possibility for everyone.

My folks have a helper come in 2-3 days a week and a visiting nurse once
a week. The need is there for more assistance but finding it is one of
the roadblocks.

Catch you later,
Ruth
