Years ago, before I grew up and got sensible, I used to smoke, and on
one occasion I got a lighter which was spring-loaded, and ignited when
a trigger was released.  I thought that was clever - until I dropped
my coat with the lighter in the pocket, and it fired.

It so  happened that a 1982 documentary movie, "Cane toads, an
unnatural history" was shown last week on the ABC.  It was interesting
as to the off-hand way in which the deadly poison was viewed.  It
showed small children with their pet cane toads, which loved to have
their tummy tickled, and never poisoned their owners.  A scientist
didn't bother with gloves when demonstrating how to squeeze the
shoulder glands to squirt out a jet of poison a metre or so.  He did
wear protective goggles, though.  One man had a small business tanning
the skins and making caps and book covers out of them, and he also
said he sold concentrated poison to Chinese Medicine Practitioners.

One interesting aspect of the toads that I didn't know was that a lot
of dogs have come addicted to them.  Whenever these dogs find a toad,
they hold it down and lick its back until they have absorbed enough to
cause them to zonk out, so they just lie there, with a glazed
expression until they recover, and then repeat the activity the next
time they find a cane toad.

The cane toads have now spread from Queensland across the Top End to
northern WA, and down into NSW.  One method of control is to broadcast
a loud recording of the love song of the male toad, to attract all the
females in the neighbourhood into a trap.

      Title: Egg Toad In The Hole
 Categories: Eggs, Breakfast
      Yield: 4 servings
 
      1    Egg
      1 sl Bread
           3 TB butter
 
  Cut a circle out of the center of the bread. Fry bread in butter until
  brown and crisp on one side. Turn it over and break and egg into the
  circle. Fry over low heat about 5 minutes or until the egg is cooked.
  Serves 1.
