-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> It would be unlikely that every airport would have a tame bomb defuser
ML> Any reasonable-size airport has them permanently on call,
ML> and the large ones certainly have them on staff.

Such matters are not normally publicised. As far as I knew, the only
bomb defusers were in the military. Even the police here call in the
army specialist if they come across a suspected bomb.

ML> Blowing up the bag or riddling it with machine gun bullets
GJ> would be much easier. Easy to get the machine gun, as every schoolboy
GJ> in USA seems to be thus equipped these days.

ML> You're making stuff up again.

Maybe just a tiny exaggeration... I watch TV.

ML> Anyhow, water cannon is a more sensible solution.

That would not make much of an impression on a sealed bomb.

ML> So you get rid of a few policemen. There are always more
ML> where those came from. I believe that's not the focus of
ML> terrorists these days, aside from the Irish Republican Army,

ML> I was talking to one of the more astute travel journalists
ML> the other day, who made the point that the terrorists require
ML> high profile terror to protect their brand integrity, so the
ML> kind of stuff you are talking with is more likely to be
ML> perpetrated by the psychotic loner who is easy to deal with
ML> than by a real cell of determined bad guys.

The professionals are normally far better trained than the psychos,
but even the latter are sometimes effective, as they come from
"nowhere", and not the usual schools in Pakistan, Georgia, etc.
Even a plane carrying only 500 passengers to a city in Scotland can
make a most satisfactory impact, particularly if it drops on a town.

ML> travel to Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean Islands.
GJ> But not to Cuba! (Haha!)
ML> As of this month, I believe Cuba is at least partially off
 ML> the forbidden list.

You mean that USA is no longer terrified by the prospect of an
invasion by the Cuban navy, armed with salsa music and rum? How brave
(or sensible) your leaders have become! Will Generous Motors be
allowed to export spare parts for 1956 Buicks and Chevrolets?

GJ> We don't have such a "national ID" card here, as Kevin found when he
 ML> We don't either, obviously.

So if a USAn non-driver is asked for an ID, what does s/he produce.

ML> Question is did he scurry off and read the memo (available to
ML> the public) that specifically lists this document as sufficient

GJ> He may remember you, for when you next pass that way.

ML> It was an airport I pass through 10 times a year but had never
ML> been in that particular terminal before and have no future
 ML> plans of visiting.

For which that man should be truly grateful.
