     Kommentar till en text av RUTH HANSCHKA
Ärende: currency
================
RUTH HANSCHKA Said to DAVE DRUM about currency

RH> -> Hong Kong, Brazil, Nicaragua, etc.

RH> -> -> RH> The Canadians already have coins for one and two dollar
RH> ->  ->  RH> denominations. The US Mint isn't as bright.

RH> -> -> Half as bright - the US Mint makes/made several coins in the
RH> -> -> U$1 denomination. The Treasury (which prints the paper money)
RH> -> -> just doesn't have the gumption to buck the dinosaurs in
RH> -> -> Congress and ditch the dollar bill. Yet.

RH> -> RH> Let the deficit get any bigger, and we may finally get them
RH> -> RH> to do away with the penny and dollar bills.

RH> -> HUH? I don't understand that statement and what it has to do with
RH> -> pennies and dollar bills.

RH> Gotta close the budget gap somehow. Printing dollars and minting
RH> pennies costs more than they're worth - literally. Pennies cost
RH> about two cents to mint currently, if memory serves. If they
RH> ditch pennies they'll save themselves some real money.

RH> Switching out paper bills for dollar coins would save money too
RH> in the long run. It wouldn't balance the budget but it wouldn't
RH> hurt.

In the short run, as well. No to mention the boon to vending machine
operators.

RH> -> RH> The old Susies never had a prayer,
RH> -> RH> bad design, but the new coins would be OK if people would
RH> ->  RH> just give them a chance.

Well, Susan B. was a purse mouthed old biddy. I don't need "warm and
fuzzy" on my money, but mean and forbidding is not something I care for
at all.

RH> -> I put a LOT of them into use - mostly as tips for wait staff.
RH> -> But, they probably get put in kid's piggy banks, grandkid's
RH> -> college funds, or similar.

RH> Pretty much. I saved a Sacajawea or two here somewhere, and
RH> probably a few Susies. We used to get them in change at an
RH> excursion railroad my dad loved.

I just put 'em right into circulation. What those I circulate 'em to do
with them is their deal ...

RH> -> -> Your average retailer isn't happy at anything the gummint
RH> ->  -> does anyway.

RH> ->  RH> Often for good reason.

RH> -> That's called being stampeded by boojums and dust bunnies. The
RH> -> sheeple tend to believe the worst case extreme hyperbole that is
RH> -> chanted to them by one wing or other of the political spectrum.
RH> -> Very few ever think a thing though to its logical conclusion.

RH> The good old Law of Unintended Consequences.

Oh, they are intended - just not by the victims. Bv)=

RH> -> RH> ...and then convince people to deal with the two dollar
RH> ->  RH> bills.

RH> -> If it is common, and the lowest denomination paper bill available
RH> -> they will use it. Becoming inured to it within seven to ten
RH> -> working days.

RH> They might, but I'm not as sure. I have one of the old ones stashed
RH> somewhere.

I put those into circulation as well. Except to one guy who runs a Rib-A
Cue joint and thinks the deuces are "the Devil's tool" and a "hoo-doo".

RH> Did you hear the one about the Connecticut Department of Social
RH> Services? Someone just found boxes upon boxes of unprocessed forms
RH> in a conference room, dated last year. People sent in their
RH> paperwork on time, and not only didn't the DSS process it late (or
RH> on time for a miracle) it sat there until an intern or someone
RH> found it and raised cain. Those responsible weren't fired, or
RH> even suspended without pay.

I hadn't heard of that - but, it's not very surprising - whether from
your state, my state, or any other political sub-division.
