HFCS is cheaper, not by that much, in the US, but more
importantly, the supply is reliable and free-flowing,
unlike sugar, whose availability is subject to political
factors as well as the normal vagaries of the markets.
Elsewhere on this planet, sugar remains the dominant
sweetener in all things including soft drinks.

 No matter how small they have to be higher than the
 DD> price of a tiny bit of sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride, and/or
 DD> potassium sulfate. Which is what separates club soda from seltzer.

The price is more relevant for the companies than for you,
and it was your frugality that was the baseline here. Soft
drinks have about 4c per serving of nonwater ingredients.

So add a shake of various salts - you could mix your own to
taste and do the soft drink companies one better.

I saw one of those things at Janis's. It seemed to work,
though once in a while it decoupled the mechanism from the
bottle with a loud noise that I thought boded ill. Perhaps
I should have done the experiment with booze but didn't
think to do so. Reports on the Internet indicate that it
can be done.

1 oz Bacardi Rum
1 oz Orange Juice
1/2 oz Pineapple Juice
7-Up

Mix rum and juices, shake well. Fill with 7-Up.
