===================================
Hi Nancy,

RH> Pre furnished house--nice. From what you've said about the stove, the
RH> owners had probably bought the stove at least 20 years before you
RH> bought the house from them.

 NB> That's about what we figured... :)

Seems to have been a 50s thing. Between the time lag of pushing the
button and the "message" getting to the coil & the iherent lag of
electric stove's reaction time, you could have a big boil over if you
weren't careful. That's one of the reasons I like gas better for
cooking.

RH> Did you have a big yard sale or big dumpster for all the junk
 RH> they left? (G)

NB> Nah... and still have lots of the junk still cluttering, especially in
NB> the basement... But some of the "junk" they left was actually good
NB> stuff, that I'm glad they didn't just throw away to get rid of... we
NB> just had to take the bad with the good... ;)

The old "one man's trash is another man's treasure" adage was true for
you then? Some of it could now have some value on the antique market.

RH> The fridge may have been the oldest appliance. The house we rented
RH> for a few years in Swansboro had a fridge that was so old there were no
RH> shelves in the door. The freezer had a slot underneath, big enough for

NB> Ours wasn't near THAT old... (G) We have one up at our camp
NB> (currently in storage for the next time we are desperate, but still in
 NB> working
NB> order) that's likely that old, and another still in use in our
NB> basement that we rescued from our church when they got a newer one

Not one of those with the big fan like unit on the top, is it? At least
you have the room to store the extra fridges. My parents have their old
one in the basement, used mostly to store sodas and such like.

NB> likely the same vintage... The old ones lasted much better than the
NB> newer ones do. The one that died soon after we moved might even have
NB> been younger than the stove and dishwasher... not sure about the
 NB> washer & dryer, agewise.

But, you had them and didn't have to worry about buying them right off.
We're on our 3rd washer & dryer because of moves, etc--only had one
washer go out on us but it was 19 years old. This dryer is 18 years
old; we bought it new when we came back from Germany. We've never
bought a new fridge tho as all places we lived in after Steve joined the
Army had one furnished.

RH> replace it, which we did, with the $50. wonder fridge. We wondered
RH> how old it was, what brand it was and how long it would last, among
RH> other things. We never did find out how old it was, found the brand
RH> name some years later and it stopped running about 3 weeks before we
RH> moved when Steve joined the Army, or about 5 1/2 years. He got some
RH> parts to jury rig it into working and it was still running when we
RH> closed the door for the last time on the place.

NB> Long enough for you not to have to worry about it. ;)

Yes, and working long enough for us to use it up until the very end. We
took the big (18.1 cubic foot) freezer with us as it was newer but then
it was in the roll over on I-95 on our way up to my parents. Long story
short, my in law's trailer hitch broke, trailer rolled off road & over
into the ditch. Some things were damaged beynd hope but the freezer
just had a dent in the top. My brother bought it off us and it lasted
him a good 20+ years.

RH> I've got to have a working stove; I cook quite a bit. The oven gets
RH> used fairly often too, and will so more now that the weather is
RH> cooling down. We have the advantage we can either call the property
RH> managment office or the landlord if something goes wrong/needs
 RH> replacing.

NB> That can indeed be an advantage... less hassle (except for getting
NB> hold of the property management or landlord), and definitely less
 NB> cost...

Getting hold of them is easy, the rest isn't always. Most of the time we
do basics and file for reimbursement. So far, not needed to have the
fridge replaced; we've got ice chest for short term use if needs be tho.

RH> We've had nice linen closets and not so nice ones. Had a nice big one
RH> in AZ, then a small one in HI. The one in GA was on the smallish side,

NB> New construction, it depends on whether the builders see much point in
NB> putting in niceties like linen closets, pantries, and such. They can
 NB> be considered old-fashioned, I guess... ;)

Also had to go with DA requirements. The kitchens in that housing area
were pitifully small, as if nobody was supposd to do any serious
cooking.

RH> Yes, and it makes for fun finding things for a bit. I try to keep
RH> certain categories of things on specific shelves but it's not always

NB> Just have to remember to put the slightly out of place things into
NB> their proper places when the space opens up... :)

Yes, and I do, for the most part.

NB> actually follow NB>> through, though he does still have the expertise
NB> both for the planning NB>> and the construction.. We'll see.

 RH> IOW, don't hold your breath. (G)

 NB> Something like that. ;)

RH> Very true. The builders put the fridge in a corner where it's not
RH> easy to swing the door open wide enough to get the crisper crawers (and
RH> similar) in or out easily. The stove, sink and dishwasher are on the
RH> opposite wall, all in a line. It's pretty much an open line from the
RH> fridge to the stove (and a small counter top but a big island makes
RH> you have to go around it to access the sink or dishwasher and larger
RH> counter tops. Of course the island can be used as counter space.

NB> Yeah, I can see some room for improvement there... (G) The way our
NB> kitchen is set up, the only real place for the fridge is such that we
NB> have to put the door on the left-hand hinge setup so that we can
NB> access the drawers... but that's not that bad a thing... ;)

Ours is set so that I can open it from where I sit at the table and grab
something. Handy at times but it means the kitchen really could use
more space. I guess if we didn't have so much cooking stuff, we'd have
a bit more room. (G)

Catch you later,
