============
Hi Burt,

BF> I been very inactive, but if I remember Steve is going for the
 BF> Ministry.

He graduated with a Master's in Divinity, concentration in Christian
Ministry, on December 14. We left on the 18th to spend several weeks
with our daughters in NV and AZ, just got back on the 15th. Now comes
the job hunt.

BF> I think he is much better off than a young acquaintance of mine who is
BF> in training for an Episcopal Priest. His wife is crude, extremely
BF> loud, uses terrible language, makes constant dirt cracks, is
BF> disrespectful to almost everyone, especially older people, etc. I
BF> don't dislike her myself, and her fellow girlfriends seem to like her
BF> despite her ... frailties. I think she is a heart of gold type kinda
BF> deep inside. But I can't think of her as a future priest's wife.

BF> Is there a part of the training that relates to that problem? Are
BF> there horror stories of such pairings? I am not concerned at all
BF> personally, just curious if such problems ruin a Pastor's career, or
 BF> are such problems overcome?

It depends. The seminary Steve went to had a program, entirely optional,
for wives of students. I graduated in May with a Diploma in Women's
Studies from that program. It wasn't a set course in how to be a pastor
or priest's wife but enabled me to work in a women's ministry of a
church.

I don't know how the Episcopal Church handles assignments of their
priests. I would hope that the person or group doing the assignments
interviews the candidates and their wives before an assignment is made
and suitability is determined. In the Southern Baptist Convention (of
which we are part), each church puts out a call for resumes; the
pastoral search committee goes thru those received, making a
determination based on the paperwork and either a video or listening in
person to the candidates; and reccommending one to the church. The
candidate (and wife, if married) make a visit to the church, usually
over a week end to meet the members in various settings and preach the
Sunday morning (sometimes evening as well) service. A vote is taken to
call the candidate, if favorable, who decides whether or not to accept
the position.

BF> Many Pastors are not blessed with good hearted, likable wives like
BF> you, and I can't help wondering about the future priest's future.

Thank you; I appreciate your kindness. As for this future priest, I hope
his wife will be what he needs as a helpmate to his ministry. I will not
judge her, just pray she has the understanding needed to fulfil her
position.

BF> This is strictly a nosy, gossipy type, ill mannered inquiry by me. I
BF> fully understand if you tell me to roll a hoop.

BF> I just wonder what kind of inside stories there are floating about.
 BF> [g]

I don't know of any inside stories, and don't think it wuld be my place
to share any.

To get back on the food topic of this forum--one of my classes was on
planning events for women of the church. In one session we learned how
to plan a wedding, and how to cut up & serve a wedding cake. A couple
of weeks after that session, a young couple in our church got married
and I was asked to do the cake cutting & serving. I'm glad I knew how to
do it properly. (G) They were also looking for a simple, inexpensive
punch to be served at the reception so I suggested the one we used when
our daughter got married. It consisted of equal parts lemon lime soda
and white grape juice with a container of lime sherbert mixed in. The
couple liked it and decided to use it for their wedding reception.

Catch you later,
Ruth
