ML>> When public transport works it is a wondrous thing.
 NB>> That it is. :)

ML> As I rely on it I need to maintain that attitude. A lot
ML> of US cities I'd like to visit don't have very good transit,
ML> which tends to prevent my going there, unless I can convince
ML> a driver (Lilli) to join me.

Rochester's public transport ebbs and flows... sometimes it's pretty
decent, but usually it's only been nicely workable if one is traveling
to or from center city, as most of the lines are spokes into town. And
the further out of town you are, the spottier the service, especially
into the wee hours or weekends... However, as a driver, I don't need to
rely on public transport, and have provided transport to others that
otherwise would have been needing to deal with the system...

ML> Europe is much easier, and I am glad that Boston is often
ML> referred to as a misplaced European city.

I'm sure that the public transport in Boston is easier on the nerves
than the driving... It's right at the top of places I don't like to
drive, along with the DC Beltway and the Baltimore Beltway at rush
hour... (and I generally enjoy driving!)

ML>> The place is called Punjabi Tadka, and it has the nuts to have
ML>> opened last year right across the street from the acknowledged
ML>> best Indian in town, Punjab.
NB>> Maybe not too nuts if their food and service is at least comparable to
NB>> the place across the street, and they'd noticed the other place being
NB>> always packed... maybe even (noticing the similarity of name) it was
NB>> started by the same (or a subset thereof) people...?

ML> Quite different styles. The established place is pretty
ML> elegant, for an Indian restaurant; this one is more like
ML> a bar (the bar is prominent as you enter) with tables.

Different styles could draw sufficient clientele, so again, maybe not
all that nuts... :)

ML> Perhaps relatives running the places, I doubt anything
ML> closer. Next time I go to either, maybe I'll ask about the
ML> other and see if I get the straight dope or just vitriol.

'Twould be interesting, at least... :) One of our most established
Indian restaurants (India House) had somewhat of a little empire, with
the main restaurant on one side of the street, and, directly across the
street, a store that sold Indian goods and ingredients/spices, with a
totally vegetarian Indian restaurant next to that... all run by the same
people. I think they finally just incorporated the vegetarian entries
into the main restaurant, as that has changed hands (and cuisines) a
couple of times already, but the store and the original restaurant are
still there and thriving. Another impetus for closing the restaurant
across the street may have been their opening an India House in Victor,
I'm a little fuzzy on that particular chronology... :)

ML>> Disconcerting start: I'd ordered lamb saag, and what came had no
ML>> spinach and was kind of orange red. Turns out that this was an
ML>> ordinary lamb curry, but as they'd made it already, and it
ML>> smelled pretty good, we didn't send it back. It was good, but
ML>> altogether too similar to one of the other dishes we'd ordered,
NB>> You'll have to go again on a less crazy night and see if you can get
NB>> the lamb saag... sounds like they'd do that well, too... :)
 ML>
ML> I should hope so. Problem being that we should have had three
ML> contrasting dishes, and we ended up with two almost identical
ML> (though good tasting ones), and next time's lamb saag (pretty
ML> easy to make, see below) is not going to fix last time's meal.

True. Maybe if you go back, and mention what happened, and that you
didn't want to complain on such a night as that, they might comp or
partially comp something in recompense... I'd wonder where the mixup
happened, at the ordertaking (and notating) stage, or at the kitchen..
but if they'd run out of spinach, they could* have let you know... (G)
Me? I'd probably keep my wondering to myself, and forebear the
complaint, hoping for better next time... ;)
