========================
Hi Michael,

RH> Mom & Dad were both raised in the Depression & raised 5 kids on a
 RH> shoestring budget.

ML> And more power to them, but their own childhood circumstance
ML> probably overtipped their perspective in the thrifty department
ML> as opposed to the quality department.

Very much so, and it is still with them. Dad saves some of the oddest
things, thinking he'll need them some day. Us kids will need a dumpster
(or 2) to clean out the house after he's gone and no longer needs those
odd things.

ML> They didn't buy at places like Sam's Club or
RH> Costco; I suspect had they been available, I think they would have. Old
RH> habits die hard so they still like to get the most they can for their
RH> money, even if the quality isn't that great.

ML> It depends of course on the value you ascribe to those
 ML> departments.

They used to get ice cream (store brand) in the big plastic buckets,
same with peanut butter. Before sandwich bags came out, Mom would wrap
our pb sandwiches in wax paper, and to save paper, put a cookie on top
of the sandwich. By lunch time, the cookie had absorbed moisture from
the bread and left a cookie sized stale spot on the sandwich. Now they
buy ice cream (an off brand usually) in the smaller tubs but buy cheap
cookies in the largest size they can get. It's usually an off brand of
sandwich or wafer cookies. Of course they pay no attention to the
nutritional labelling so Mom gets more carbs than she needs at all of
her meals.

ML> in every way to homemade. Speaking of inferior, I had some
ML> Girl Scout Thin Mints today; they're not so thin any more
ML> and have less (and yuckier I think) chocolate.
RH> I've not had any GS cookies in a couple of years. I know they've gone
RH> down in quantity as the price has gone up, sounds like the quality has
 RH> as well.

ML> I looked it up: there are two authorized manufacturers of
ML> the cookies, and their Websites both show pictures of the
ML> Thin Mints. Little Brownie Bakers shows mints with holes,
ML> such as I recently had; Interbake (George Weston, ABC
ML> Bakers, and other aliases) shows the kind I remember,
ML> somewhat thinner than the others, with smooth coating. I
ML> will have to search out these latter ones to see if they
ML> comport with my early memories.

Hmmmm, sounds like Little Brownie Bakers cheaped out on their cookies.
They used to do the mint cookies like you remember. I'll have to
remember that if we do decide to buy any Girl Scout cookies this year.

ML> I think the caviar might have been a setup, as the lid
ML> said in big letters "product of Iran"; if someone had taken a
ML> pic of the guy chowing on an embargoed product, we could have
ML> had a scandal earlier in his tenure. I also think that he or
ML> his advisors had had their antennae up, so that might have been
ML> why he never even showed up in that room.
RH> Sounds like somebody had checked things out, guess they didn't want a
RH> photo op to become a photo oops.

ML> One of the required skills for a public figure is the
ML> ability to hire people who catch things like that.

Somebody's reached his level of incompetance and needs a lateral
promotion. (from The Peter Principle)

Catch you later,
Ruth
