II was gifted with a bacon cooker for the microwave. It sorta works ... but,
y'know I have a Fry Daddy with a tankful of bacon dripping ... and it does a
much better job - easier. And it really gets the bacon CRISPY.

I've never in my born days *bought* pie plant. Ever. I see it in the produce
departments and I snicker. I have a lady down the way who has it growing
alongside her shed. I asked if she would part with any of it and was told "Help
yourself. I certainly won't eat the stuff." 

I bought and installed for her some decorative border/fencing to sorta keep
Oswald the Rabbit from the crop. Before that I either had a rhubarb patch or
started one anywhere I lived. It's really easy to grow and it's pretty much
self tending, once established.

Rhubarb is a cool season, perennial crop. It requires temperatures below
40°F/5°C to break dormancy and to stimulate spring growth and summer
temperatures averaging less than 75°F/24°C for vigorous vegetative growth. The
Northern U.S. and Canada are well suited for rhubarb production. In the United
states it grows best in the northern states from Maine south to Illinois and
west to Washington state. Once planted, rhubarb plantings remain productive for
8 to 15 years.

The first shoots to appear in the spring are edible petioles and leaves. These
emerge sequentially as long as temperatures remain cool (below 90°F/32°C). As
temperatures increase, top growth is suppressed, even appearing dormant in
periods of extreme heat. With declining temperatures in later summer, foliage

At the Canadian Caper picnic in Hemmingford I brought a little self-published
pamphlet/cookbook of rhubarb recipes to pass out to all attendees. I wish I
still had one of them as the original data, etc. is locked forever on a dead
hard drive.

But, this is one that I do regularly - it makes wonderful I Scream Sundaes -- 

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Rhubarb Sauce
 Categories: Five, Sauces, Fruits
      Yield: 2 pints

      2 c  Water
      2 c  (level) sugar
      3 lb Rhubarb; in 1" pieces

  Make a syrup with the water and sugar. Boil together a
  few minutes.

  Add rhubarb to syrup when it starts boiling in center.
  Watch closely and let boil *JUST* *1* *MINUTE*

  Now here is the trick that makes ordinary rhubarb sauce a
  Sauce Deluxe: Pour into a bowl or pan with a tight cover.
  Leave tightly covered until cold, and you will find a
  sauce very different from any you have ever eaten.

  Good on I scream, panquakes, waffles, toast, biscuits,
  peanut butter sarnies, whatever you care to add it to.
