Ärende: weddings 312
====================
ML> things but was convinced to hustle on over, so he showed up
ML> maybe half an hour after zero hour, not too bad considering.
NB> No, not too bad considering... Many a wedding starts half an hour or
NB> so late, for any number of reasons... One of my nieces had to wait for
NB> her mother to show up...

Having played at numerous weddings and receptions, I've seen
quite a lot of oddities. The most uncomfortable was one where
the bride didn't show up, and there was another wedding in
Memorial Church scheduled in 1 1/2 hours. She eventually got
there an hour late, owing to being behind a car that exploded
on the Southeast Expressway. We had only one piece on hand,
an hour-long divertimento by Mozart, but we had to save one
of the movements for the processional, so we did a few extra
repeats. It was an interesting group - David Layzer the
astronomer on violin, me on viola, and I think Dave Paschke
came in substituting for the Yo, who had to cancel, being a
busy boy. At the reception the groom joined us for the Dvorak
American quartet. So far as I know, the couple is still
together over 30 years later, so somebody did something right.

NB> playing for a wedding I always plan much more music than I think I
NB> should really need for the prelude, since one just never knows... ;)
NB> And more than once, I've gone through all of it and had to repeat
 NB> some... ;)

One should always be prepared, as the above story emphasizes.

ML> provided a blue scarf thing (borrowed, blue, old) for the
ML> maid of honor and fussed maternally about how she should
ML> have brought something for all the rest as well).
 NB> One can't foresee all circumstances... ;)

And though Roslind is sort of godmother to everyone in town,
she still shouldn't have had to worry about this stuff, but
of course that's in her nature, which is why she's a counseling
psychologist, or whatever they call that kind of person up there
in Canada.

ML> The mother of the bride was most put off,
ML> asking where the groom was to all and sundry (even me, who
 ML> had been just introduced at the event);
NB> Obviously her questions were more or less to the air...

She was wandering around sort of dazed and asking all and sundry
individually - it wasn't just a "does anyone know where Eric is"
sort of thing. Speaking of which, the celebrant kept calling
Justine Justin. I don't think he ever called Eric Erica, though.

NB>> ... A good breakfast is no substitute for a large dinner.
ML> I don't think breakfast is justified unless you're working
 ML> heavy labor afterward.
NB> I'm generally in your camp on that... Except for echo picnics,
NB> provided breakfasts (such as at a B&B, or the "free" at a motel if
NB> reasonably decent), or included breakfasts as at a conference/retreat.
NB> The latter can almost classify as working heavy (albeit mental,
 NB> usually) labor afterward... :)

I admit free (i.e. included) is good.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v7.04

      Title: Matrimonial Cake
 Categories: Canadian, Bars
   Servings: 1

  1 1/2 c Flour, all purpose
  1 1/2 c Rolled oats
      1 c Brown sugar; packed
    1/2 ts Baking soda
    1/4 ts -Salt
    3/4 c Butter; softened

MMMMM-----------------------------FILLING----------------------------------
      2 c Dates; chopped, pitted
    1/2 c Sugar, granulated
      1 ts Lemon juice
    3/4 c -Boiling water

"This recipe in some old cookbooks is called Date Sandwich Cake. Other
variations are Raisin Squares or Fig Squares. ..
Date Squares (Matrimonial Cake, if you happen to come from the West) are a
real nostalgia treat. The fillings in the 30s recipes was extremely sweet.
Today's versions reduce the sugar in the filling, since the dates are
sweet enough, and are often microwaved. Raisin Puff, an old favorite in
P.E.I. is somewhat similar, with raisin filling sandwiched between layers
of soft cookie dough instead of an oatmeal mixture."

Filling: In saucepan, cook dates, sugar, lemon juice and water over medium
heat, stirring often, until the dates are soft, about 15 minutes. Let
  cool.
    In a bowl, combine flour, rolled oats, sugar, baking soda and salt;
blend in butter until mixture is crumbly. Pat half onto bottom of 9 inch
square pan. Spread filling evenly over the top. Sprinkle with the
remaining flour mixture, patting lightly. Bake in a 350F oven for 30 to 35
minutes or until nicely browned. Let cool; cut into squares.

  MAKES: 36 SQUARES
VARIATION: Mincemeat Squares : Use 2 cups mincemeat instead of date
  filling.
