========================
Hi Janis,

JK> ends > lunch time was fairly consistent. That extra piece of bread was
JK> one of > the first things I dropped when I got out on my own (college)
JK> and never > insisted on it for my girls.

JK> Never had "extra" bread at lunch time ... Just toast at breakfast with

We had bread set at both breakfast and lunch, probably to help stretch
whaever was served for lunch, definately for breakfast. Not toast
either, except for rare occaisions or if we were sick.

JK> cereal and orange juice was normal :) A lot of fruit with lunch was
JK> normal though. Ron's home was similar from what he tells me.. his
JK> parents always kept carrots, celery and apples around for "snacks".
JK> Ron ate the whole apple (core and all (G)) and still does that to this

Sounds like something our younger daughter has done, don't remember what
her reasoning was.

JK> day :) He told me the only reason he did that was so that he didn't
JK> have to get up and throw out the apple core :) :) My grandsons now
JK> chuckle when they see him eat the whole thing :)

I'm not surprised they would get a chuckle out of it.

>> The only cold cereal Mom bought was Cheerios.. because back then, it
>> was really the only "healthy" one (since it was made with oats).

JK> > We had the store brand of them as well. Corn, wheat, oats, rice--all
JK> > grains, some better tasting than others.

JK> Know what you mean there.. I think with all the allergies in our
JK> family cheerios was (then) about all that was tolerable for all of us
JK> kids back then. My brother's allergies were about like my daughter's.

Sounds logical then, that they were the only ones bought. We didn't have
the food allergy issues with me or my siblings.

>> Yes, it even makes a difference in oatmeal :) I grind my own groats
>> and that really makes such a difference in taste. It also cuts down
>> dramatically on transglycerides.

JK> Oops.. Triglycerides :) knew there was something wrong there (g)

OK, I had issues with them but they were much better with my last
bloodwork. I think the insulin and Crestor did the trick.

>> Mom never even kept the salt shaker on the table.. I guess she was
>> determined in that respect.

JK> > My mom never kept a shaker on the table either. I got into the habit
JK> of > reaching for it at college; had to break that when we got married
JK> and I > could season my food the way I wanted to.

 JK> Makes sense :)

institiutional food is so bland since it's cooked basically unseasoned.
Trouble is, the only options I had at the time (they may have changed)
were salt & pepper, ketchup or mustard. Nothing like salsa, hot sauce or
even soy sauce that I can recall.

JK> > I'm still consuming gluten, but just watching the carbs.

 JK> That's good. It's important for you, I understand.

Yes, and combination of that, insulin (for about 10 months, none in the
past couple of weeks), losing weight and a bunch of other reasons, I'm
doing a lot better now.

>> > BTW, we can't commit to the picnic yet--depends on the date/time
>> Steve's > sisters set for the family week end in PA. We would like to

>> Understand. I hope Steve's surgery goes well, and we hope you folks
>> can make it :)

JK> > Thanks, he had the pre op work up today and as far as I know, all
 JK> went > well.

JK> That's good. When is the surgery set for? I expect it's soon but
JK> missed your post about that if you've already mentioned it.

It's set for next Wednesday, April 17 at 7:15 am. He's the first case
for the surgeon; they expect it to last 4-5 hours. Yes, I'll bring a lot
to keep me "entertained" for that time.

JK> > It took a couple of hours but I occupied myself reading about NC
JK> > bbq and seafood (among other things) in old "Our State" magazines.

JK> Interesting stuff one finds sometimes in Dr.'s offices :)

These were actually 2012 magazines, interesting reading about the state.
The seafood article had a bit of a write up on the place outside of
Swansboro where we used to buy our seafood, didn't mention the peeling
pink paint that's been on the building for years. It was there when we
left the area in 1983 and when we visited it in 2007.

Catch you later,
