========================
Hi Nancy,

NB> standard NB>> "balanced breakfast" was eggs, toast & butter, juice
NB> and/or fruit, and NB>> cereal w/milk, according to the "experts" at
NB> one time... oh, probably NB>> some sort of meat, too, like bacon or
 NB> sausage... ;)

RH> That's way more breakfast than I'd ever eat! Eggs & such but not the
RH> cereal or vice versa. If I go to IHOP or some place like that for
RH> breakfast, I find a meal without the pancakes or give them to Steve.
 RH> (G)

NB> Much more than I'd eat, either... :) Unless I do happen to really be
NB> hungry, I'd order something less extensive, too (on the rare occasion
 NB> when I'm out for breakfast)... :)

I know pancakes are inexpensive to make but why add them to an already
good sized meal? No wonder the average American weight is so much higher
than it was 15-20 years ago, everything has so many more calories added
to it. I'm usually not too hungry in the morning so a breakfast of that
size is probably over twice as much as I'd want. In reality, it's more
than I'd eat at most any meal.

NB> great sale and/or for a NB>> trip). Sunday breakfast was often
NB> raisin bread (or on occasion
NB> NB>> pumpernickel bread) eaten in the car on the way to some country
NB> church NB>> where Daddy was supplying a pulpit... ;)

RH> We never had the sugary cereals. I'm mot sure why, unless they cost
RH> more, but since we were allowed to put sugar on the cereal, it doesn't

NB> It was a very rare occasion for us. Daddy never bought the big
NB> boxes... I think they probably are more or at least were more
NB> expensive than the plain cereals we usually had.

RH> matter. Raisins were a Christmas day treat but if we picked berries
RH> (straw, black, rasp...........) in the summer, they could go on the
 RH> cereal the next morning.

NB> We generally weren't anywhere to be able to pick berries, and they

We lived out in the country, lots of berry bushes on the neighbor's
surrounding acreage (that we had free run of).

NB> were much more expensive to buy than raisins. That was generally a
 NB> kitchen
NB> staple in our house, anyway. Daddy would also use them to make
 NB> oatmeal raisin cookies... :)

Raisins weren't a staple in my mom's kitchen as Dad doesn't like them.
Every year for Christmas we'd get an orange and box of raisins (left
over from Mom's fruitcake making) in our stocking but Dad got 2 oranges
instead. OTOH, they've been a staple in my househhold for years.

RH> Sunday breakfast was the same as the rest of the week, nothing special.

NB> If we were just staying in town, Sunday breakfast was the same as
NB> during the week, too. But when we were driving any distance, there
NB> wasn't the time usually to sit down and have a proper meal, so we just
 NB> had the
NB> bread in the car. :) Even in the earlier days, there were already 5
NB> or 6 kids to get ready... ;)

Mom & Dad would have gotten us up earlier to make sure we had our
standard breakfast and that the clean up was done before we left. Just
the way they operated--get in all those carbs first thing in the
morning.

Catch you later,
Ruth
