========================
Hi Nancy,

RH> I know pancakes are inexpensive to make but why add them to an already
RH> good sized meal? No wonder the average American weight is so much

NB> Because most people expect them...? ;)

Could be, but are we programmed to expect them?

RH> higher than it was 15-20 years ago, everything has so many more
RH> calories added to it. I'm usually not too hungry in the morning so a
RH> breakfast of that size is probably over twice as much as I'd want. In
RH> reality, it's more than I'd eat at most any meal.

 NB> Some people don't have calorie/weight/carb issues... Obviously it's
NB> not a place that you or I would be so likely to frequent. :)

No, and I'm not that overly fond of that kind of food anyway. Had a
friend who liked Denny's a lot; I had a time figuring out what I wanted
to eat some days.

NB> NB>> were much more expensive to buy than raisins. That was
NB> generally NB>> a kitchen staple in our house, anyway. Daddy would
NB> also use them NB>> to make oatmeal raisin cookies... :)

RH> Raisins weren't a staple in my mom's kitchen as Dad doesn't like them.

 NB> That makes sense. :)

RH> Every year for Christmas we'd get an orange and box of raisins (left
RH> over from Mom's fruitcake making) in our stocking but Dad got 2
RH> oranges instead. OTOH, they've been a staple in my househhold for
 RH> years.

NB> We'd get an orange in the toe, an apple in the heel, and generally a
NB> box (or baggie) of raisins and a tangerine somewhere in the
 NB> stocking...
NB> Nowadays if I make stockings for Christmas, my apple is replaced by
 NB> another orange...

My folks would put a small gift (roll of film or something like that)
and candy bar in the stocking in addition to the raisins and orange.

NB> RH>> Sunday breakfast was the same as the rest of the week, nothing
NB> special. NB>> If we were just staying in town, Sunday breakfast was
NB> the same as NB>> during the week, too. But when we were driving any
NB> distance, there NB>> wasn't the time usually to sit down and have a
NB> proper meal, so we NB>> just had the bread in the car. :) Even in
NB> the earlier days, there NB>> were already 5 or 6 kids to get ready...
 NB> ;)

RH> Mom & Dad would have gotten us up earlier to make sure we had our
RH> standard breakfast and that the clean up was done before we left.
RH> Just the way they operated--get in all those carbs first thing in
 RH> the morning.

NB> As I remember it, we were already getting up pretty early... earlier
NB> probably wasn't a very viable option in our house... :)

So, you had a breakfast to go. I did that a few times when Steve had to
preach out of town; it did make it easier getting the girls ready. Just
had to make sure I had an extra outfit packed, in case they got whatever
they were wearing dirty while eating.

Catch you later,
Ruth
