=====================
Hi Michael,

ML> I suppose that if I had to rank them, I'd put them in the
ML> same order as you, but Bourdain pours an equal dose of
ML> vitriol for each of them.
RH> Is it scripted or does it seem real? The impression I got from
RH> catching a bit of his shows wasn't that positive a feeling.

ML> They're all pretty scripted, but I've got the feeling that none
ML> of these guys would say anything on screen that they thought was
ML> an actual out-and-out falsehood. The most famous Bourdain comment
ML> about Sandra Lee referred to a most unfortunate episode in which
ML> she made a "Kwanzaa cake," not only a stupid cake but a stupid
ML> idea, and one that she later excused away by saying that she
ML> hadn't come up with the recipe but was merely a presenter. Hello?

She's always given me the impression she was wandering around left field
in some obscure ball park.

ML> matured and more interesting. I've only seen a couple episodes
ML> of The Layover and find that he's returned to an uninformed
ML> and slightly unpleasant persona who knows less about the
ML> places he's laid over in than I do, invariably. Leading one to
ML> wonder, who is the real Bourdain, anyway - is he just an
ML> invention of the media moguls, or is there some realness
 ML> hidden inside there someplace.
RH> He probably has some of the arrogant, self assured character in him
RH> and the script writer(s) brought it out in force. Then they probably
RH> got slammed and ratings went down so they backed off

ML> You have an idealized view of the viewers! The ratings didn't
ML> go down because of his snarkiness, they went up, and he became
ML> famous from it, probably much wealthier, too.

Just knowing which version I'd watch, and figuring (wrongly, I guess)
that more people have tastes similar to mine.

ML> , only to go back
RH> to their original ideas with the 3rd show. At any rate, he's not on my
RH> top ten dinner invites list.

ML> The third show, from what I've seen, is boring. Haven't
 ML> seen the fourth yet.

I doubt I will see any more of his shows.

ML> for resorts and hotels and cruise ships and restaurants that
ML> none of us could actually afford to go to. Quite well-spoken
RH> IOW, we can just dream of what she recommends.

ML> I actually get to do some of the things by judicious and
ML> sometimes downright slippery (but within the rules) use of
ML> points; not all the time, of course, or even very often,
ML> but enough to be spoiled by. Until about 5 years ago I used
ML> points only on friends or in emergencies, but I've been
ML> convinced that as I've been given the opportunities, I might
ML> as well use as many as I can. The hotels, not so much, as
ML> though I've on occasion been offered 50-75% discounts, the
ML> list price has been hugely, bizarrely out of reach. What's
ML> the use of being offered a huge suite overlooking Manhattan
ML> at 50-75% off when the full price is $2000 a night?

I know, we've encouraged our parents to spend their money on things they
want to do instead of saving it for our inheritance. Back in fall of
1995, my parents did a 5 week cross country road trip; one of my sisters
tried to talk them out of it. The rest of us encouraged them to go; had
they not, they would have forever regretted it. Now they have those
memories (well, not too sure of how much my mom remembers at this point)
to look back on, instead of regrets that they never took that trip.

ML> Only way we could have
RH> afforded to live in HI was the fact Steve was in the Army.

ML> Or by becoming a pair of ne'er-do-wells on the north shore,
ML> which certainly wouldn't fit your philosophy (mine, either).

No, definately not our lifestyle.

RH> So you move on to other things.

ML> Or rather have other things move toward me, which is the
ML> way most of my vaguely successful personal endeavors have
ML> happened. The ones I've moved on to have generally eluded
ML> me or turned out to be not so great an idea.

I've done things I never thought I would, a lot that I though I would,
some things haven't happened (yet) that I'd considered over the years.
Overall tho, I've no regrets about missed opportunities or
shoulda/coulda/woulda times.

 ML> Boxty
RH> Looks good, and lots of flavor from the bacon and onion.
ML> Yes - it seemed relatively adventurous and interesting,
ML> given that it's Irish food.
RH> But how did it get that name?

ML> No clue, there are those who claim that it came from a root
 ML> meaning baking.

Probably an article on it in Wikipedia if I wanted to check it out. (G)
