Kroger is not in any trouble that I can see. The two Raleigh stores that closed
were "Due to lowering financial returns, the difficult decision was made to
close the locations in an effort to maintain the grocer's commitment to low
prices and quality food products for customers across North Carolina," the
release said. "Although Kroger has continued to use its resources to improve
each location, both have been unprofitable for the company."

And in a newsletter I get from ING (where I have a little investment account) 

"Credit Suisse Boosts Price Target, Estimates on Kroger (KR)

Citing the company's ability to gain market share, analysts at Credit Suisse
raised the price target and earnings estimates on supermarket operator The
Kroger Co. (KR) on Tuesday.

The analysts rate KR as "Outperform" and now see shares reaching $38. This new
price target suggests a 12% upside to Monday's closing price of $33.95.

Shares of Kroger (KR) have a dividend yield of 1.77% based on last night's
closing price of $33.95 and the company's annualized dividend payout of 60
cents per share."

Doesn't sound like they are in any manner of "trouble" to me. My local Krogers
closed 35 years ago in a labour dispute. I still miss them. OF course I still
miss the A&P stores, too. And they went tits-up far longer ago than the closing
of the Kroger stores.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Easy Potato Latkes
 Categories: Five, Potatoes, Vegetables, Kosher
      Yield: 10 servings

      2 sm Onions
      6 md Potatoes
      3 lg Eggs
           Salt & pepper
    3/4 c  Oil for frying

  Peel and grate potatoes and onions together. Squeeze
  liquid out of mixture. Stir in eggs, salt and pepper.

  Pour enough oil into a skillet so that it reaches a depth
  of 1/4"; heat over medium-high heat. Drop spoonful of
  mixture into hot oil. Fry until golden on one side; flip,
  and fry until golden on the other side.

  Makes 10 servings.
