=====================
Hi Nancy,

NB> Simple enough... turn each one on 2, and see which coil gets redhot...
NB> :) If neither does, that's one of the dead burners... (G)

RH> But how hot do the 2 working ones get? Could I saute an onion
RH> reasonably well or make a quick (thin) omelette? Conversly, could I
RH> make a pot of sauce and cook it at a very low temperature all day?
RH> What about the in between setting jobs?

NB> When both coils are redhot (HI), water boils quickly, saute goes
NB> quickly, etc. If the outer coil comes on for at the 2 setting, then
NB> you get that level heat at the outside ring of the pan bottom, if the
NB> inner one does, you get that level heat in the middle of the pan
 NB> bottom.

IOW, it's a mattr of playing around with them a bit until you know what
you have to do to get the results you want. Then make note of it and
keep the note in a safe place. Repeat as needed for each cooking
process, until you have a notebook full of settings for whatever you
want to cook. (G)

NB> Depends on what you want. 3 has both coils working at medium heat, so
NB> good for a slower pace... and eventually will bring water to a
NB> near-boil, if not a full boil. LO turns off the same coil as 2 did,
NB> for that particular burner... so same considerations. That one often
NB> works well for a simmer, either way it may be set up. WM does a good
 NB> job of
NB> cooking at a very low temp all day, but might not hold a simmer.

You just have to accept the learning curve until you're ready to get a
new stove.

NB> Actual settings vs perceived...? Well, that probably would be fuel
 NB> for discussion... ;)

Around here, big time discussion. (G)

NB> Question is moot, anyway... as the stove is just part of the mainly
NB> disfunctional kitchen... (G) So, highly unlikely that all you lot of
NB> cooks would be standing over it arguing about whether or not it did
NB> what You wanted it to... ;)

We'd all have a say in that discussion. I think we'd all probably make
it work for us--maybe not quite in the way we would think ideal but if
it works, then who's to complain? And you know we can turn out some
good eats in all kinds of cooking set ups.

NB> around NB>> I don't think I was ever in the FULLY dormant stage...
 NB> but pretty NB>> close... :)

RH> As long as you were boiling water in the microwave for a cup of tea,
RH> you weren't fully dormant. Sometimes that's as much as I feel like
 RH> cooking when I'm sick.

NB> One of the first uses I put the microwave to, was heating a cup of
NB> half milk and half chai tea mix. Something that I didn't have the
 NB> means to
NB> do simply before, as I didn't want to take the effort to keep track of
NB> warming the milk on the stove. ;)

I know, as soon as you turn your back to check on something else, you
get a boil over. It's the law of "Go Figure!".

NB> Next question is whether our favorite tools and gadgets form our
NB> kitchen habits or whether they become our favorite DUE to our
 NB> habits... ;)

 RH> Yes. (G)

 NB> Ok. ;)

Sure about that?
