I'm back.  No X-ray machines, carrying a sharp knife in my carry-on
luggage, and no seat belts.  A 6 1/2 hour trip, from Broken Hill to
Adelaide.  I paid an extra $10 to travel in the lounge car, but got
help-yourself coffee and tea, and a plate of excellent hot tarts, with
apples to freshen with.  All courtesy of Great Southern Rail.  The
travel cost to me was $8.

That is the difference between then and now.  In the past, on several
occasions I have seen DC3s or DC6Bs coming in to land with one prop
stationary, but there was no publicity about it.  Of course it is less
obvious to the casual observer when jet is not working - unless half
the cowling is missing.  And with every passenger carrying a
photographic recording device, the airlines can't get away with trying
to ignore or downgrade the engine failure.

Why did all those passengers clap their hands?

As they wanted to change the entire engines, it was easier to take the
A380s back to where the spare engines were kept.  A Trent 900 would
probably not fit in a 777.  As it was only one engine on each of those
A380s that was leaking oil, they probably thought there was a good
chance of the other 3 getting them home without finishing up grilled
in a fireball.
 
MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05
 
      Title: Singapore Satay
 Categories: Meats, Main dish
      Yield: 4 Servings
 
      1 lb Tender beef or lamb
      4    Small red onions, chopped
      2    Large cloves garlic, chopped
      1 T  Fresh lemon juice
      1 t  Ground cumin
      1 t  Ground ginger
      1 T  Turmeric
    1/2 t  Freshly ground pepper
    1/2 t  Salt
  1 1/2 t  Brown sugar
      3 T  Soysauce
           Peanut or corn oil as needed
 
    Cut the meat into 1-inch cubes, carefully trimming away all the fat
  and gristle. Place the meat in a non-metallic container. Puree the
  onions, garlic, lemon juice, cumin, ginger, turmeric, pepper, salt,
  brown sugar and soy sauce in a blender or food processor, and pour
  over the meat. Marinate the meat at least 3 hours at room temperature
  or overnight in the refrigerator. Soak bamboo skewers in water for at
  least 30 minutes. Thread the meat cubes on the skewers, and reserve
  any unabsorbed marinade. Place an oiled grill close to the heat
  source over a wood fire or over a charcoal fire with wood chips
  scattered on top, and cook rapidly, turning and basting frequently
  with the reserved marinade or oil. Makes 4 appetizer servings or 2
  entree servings.
