============================
-=> Quoting Dave Drum to Glen Jamieson <=-

DD> I learned about Poh from one of my favourite resources - Usenet News
 DD> Groups. Specifically alt.binaries.multimedia and
 DD> alt.binaries.multimedia.cooking ... It's also my source for Nigella

GJ> My old, DOS browser, NetTamer, has a listing of Usenet News Groups,
 GJ> which I haven't yet used. I will give it a try.

DD> Most e-mail clients also have a facility for reading NNTP messages.
DD> But, as a matter of practicality, one needs a dedicated newsreader
DD> program. I imagine that your NetTamer sox is not set-up to handle
 DD> videos, etc.

The version of NetTamer I originally used was on a 5 1/4" floppy disk,
but I have the latest Beta update which came out in year 2000, which I
run under W95. It does handle a range of still pictures; not movies,
though.

DD> You'll probably want something like MicroPlanet Gravity 2.9.15 Beta (A
DD> fully-featured Usenet newsreader for 32/64 bit Windows used for
DD> reading and decoding binaries.), GrabIt 1.7.2 Beta 4 (GrabIt is one of
DD> the easiest binary Usenet downloaders in the world.) available from
 DD> www.freewarefiles.com
DD> There is also the old standby Free Agent which is no longer supported
DD> but is still a nice program. It is available from
 DD> http://free-agent.en.softonic.com/ or
 DD> http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Network_and_Internet/Newsreader_Tool
 DD> s/Free_ Agent.html

I shall save that information for use when I return from Kiwilind in 3
weeks time. The Virgin whisks me away at sparrow-fart tomorrow...

DD> I have used Free Agent in past from W98 thru W2K ... but there is so
DD> much on Usenet and it requires (as do all the freeware readers I have
DD> looked at) hand sorting ... pretty much. So, I invested U$40 in the
DD> shareware program NewsBin -- which is constantly under development and
DD> is designed for snagging binaries - like the shows we have been
DD> discussing or the 4 disc set of Julia & Jaques - Cooking at Home which
DD> is currently downloading in the background.
DD> Be aware, too, that most ISPs do *NOT* repeat **NOT** offer an NNTP
DD> news service. And if they do it is so stripped down as to be next to
DD> useless. The facts of life are that the Usenet has gotten so huge as to
DD> require several dedicated servers downloading and sending out
DD> information 24/7. And multiple terabytes of stable storage. And no ISP
DD> is going to invest in that and offer it
DD> as a part of a basic subscription. Not and remain financially viable.
DD> So, I subscribe (at U$15/mo) to a news server which carries the entire
 DD> Usenet backbone.

My ISP is tpg.com.au, which also does a mobile phone service. I have
no idea what they do about Usenet.

DD> It's a whole different world out there - and one which will demand
DD> that you be dragged, kicking and screaming into the 21st century if you
 DD> wish to articipate.

I have barely made it into the 20th century. I am scared!

DD> OTOH, you might ask Keving. He may have some advice/ideas how you can
DD> do this on the cheap with not a lot of effort. IIRC, Kevin is good at
 DD> cheap and easy.
 DD> Bv)=

He is still setting up his computers in his new accommodation, and
getting to know the Sudanese lad next door. He has a number of news
sources, most of which come with automatic translation into English,
which in turn often requires imagination to understand.

GJ> program, "Luke Nguyen's Vietnam", which is worth looking at. He was

DD> All I have seen so far is the first series. I will watch for further
 DD> episodes.

According to a Vietnamese-born friend who visited there recently, the
places where Nguyen sampled the street-food must have been cleaned up
for the TV cameras, as when she was there, there was a lot more
rubbish lying around.

DD> Did you ever consider mental (and possibly physical) laziness? As well
DD> as the basic conservatism of most people ... "It wasn't invented here,
DD> I've never done it, don't know anything about it, it's different and
DD> I don't want to do anything new!!!" People is funny ducks, old son.
GJ> With that sort of defeatist attitude towards life, it is not really
GJ> surprising that they were poor and jobless! One of the mature age
GJ> students shown expressed her amazement that cooking could be so easy,
GJ> and that the food tasted so good. She had got to the age of 30 or so,
GJ> and apparently never tried cooking anything. Incredible!

DD> I don't think it's so much a defeatist attitude as they have never
DD> been given reason for optimism or to try new adventures. As I said,
 DD> people stick with what
DD> they know - usually. I'd bet that now that she knows how easy it is
DD> that her culinary horizons will expand.

That was the hope of the chefs conducting the courses.

GJ> My 6 yo g'daughter is starting to show an interest in cooking, which I

GJ> That is simple enough. Young Jemiah loves pasta, and strangely, is
 GJ> addicted to Parmesan cheese,

DD> Pasta is one of the simplest (and complex) things one can make. Try
 DD> her on this DD> one ...

 DD> Title: Pesto Genovese
DD> Categories: Pasta, Herbs, Sauces, Cheese

That looks like something she would enjoy cooking and eating. Thanks.
