JK> Now that is just plain funny that tobacco is from that group.. :) But
JK> as you say, that's probably where the poisonous stories came from.

I first started checking into the inter-relationships when my chile plants and
tomatoes got hit with a dandy called the tobacco mosaic virus.

 JK> Oh that's a bit much!

'Strewth. German peasants called potatoes "Teufels Wurzel". I learned it as one
of those "useless bits of trivia" that get crammed into one's brain from being
a voracious reader. Until 1780, they were rigorously excluded from prudent
French tables, as they were thought to cause leprosy. Devout Scotch
Presbyterians refused to eat them because they weren't mentioned in the Bible.
In Prussia, King Frederick William I threatened to cut off the noses and ears
of all peasants who refused to plant them. Russian peasants considered them
unclean and un-Christian, calling them Devil's apples. In colonial
Massachusetts, they were considered the spoor of witches.

Ireland adopted the potato first, and even made it the foundation of its
national diet--a fact that was to have terrible repercussions in 1845 when a
late blight attacked the potato crop and caused the famine that was to send
Irish emigres all over the world seeking a better life.

JK> Yes, very true.. And as far as cleanup goes, I can make what some would

 JK> Understand :)

JK> I see Nancy is planning the next picnic.. I wish we could go.. but
JK> we've had so many hard hits with finances lately, we really can't swing
JK> it.. bummer. I'm trying to dig up some work in the meantime, who knows,
 JK> maybe I'll get lucky (g).

Given the work situation and such I dunno if i can make it or no. If I do I'll
likely just show up and get a room near-by ... or as near-by as possible.
