Ärende: Backing it up

I use DeLorme mapping software, so I am not familiar with the Micro$not
product. But, keep in mind that the speech-to-text and vice-versa is fairly new
technology and Slick Willy has been retired from the giant steamroller company
for more than two years. And he was more a marketroid than than a hands-on nuts
and bolts guy.

DD> I don't have too much trouble with using the "Program Files" directory

DD> files and keep all the optional and useful stuff on a different
DD> partition. It also helps when backing up to do that.

ML> Sounds sort of Dale-ish. Now that the D: drive has been opened up

I don't know how Dale arrived at his plan of file/program storage. For me it
came from being contrarian and from seeing too many people lose the lot when
their single partition got corrupted and then call me (when I owned and ran
Megabyte Computer Works) to come bail them out. My ideal situation is to have a
small (capacity small - 20 gigs or so) C:\ drive and have another higher
capacity drive for the other partitions. Using a laptop almost exclusively as
you do, that's gonna be hard to do.

ML> I might consider it. But now that the physical drive has started to
ML> grind and make funny noises, I might not.

Having your hard drive making noises like a ready-mix truck is not a good
thing. Do you have an external plug-in drive to which you can save your
programs and data? You might also consider using one of the new(er) solid state
drives when replacing your internal drive. They have no moving parts and thus
cannot begin to make cement mixer noises. Geeks has a selection here:

Be warned you may get sticker shock as the cost per mega-byte hearkens back to
the mid 1990s. But, an SSD ought to outlive several conventional drives.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Solid Gold Chocolate-Almond Bark
Categories: Five, Candies, Desserts, Snacks, Chocolate
      Yield: 8 servings

     17 oz Bittersweet (60%) chocolate;
           - 2 tb fine grated, rest
           - chopped
  1 1/2 c  Whole, skin-on almonds;
           - toasted, coarse chopped
           Candied ginger or orange
           - peel; opt

Line a 10" X 15" rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a double boiler, heat the chopped chocolate over
simmering water, stirring frequently, until almost melted
and an instant-read thermometer registers 105øF, about 20
minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and stir until the
thermometer registers 110øF, 1 to 2 minutes more. Remove the
insert from the pan, reserving the pot of water. Let the
chocolate cool, stirring occasionally, until the thermometer
  registers 87øF, 25 to 45 minutes.

Add the grated chocolate to the melted chocolate, return the
insert to the pot and stir constantly over medium-low heat
until the temperature reaches 90øF and most of the grated
chocolate has melted. Remove the insert and stir in the
almonds. Dry the outside of the insert, then pour the
chocolate onto the prepared baking sheet; spread into an
even layer, leaving a 1-inch border. Refrigerate for 20
minutes, then let stand at room temperature until hardened,
about 45 minutes. Using a sharp knife, slice the chocolate
block into uneven slabs of bark.
