Ärende: frost
=============
-=> Quoting Glen Jamieson to Bill Swisher <=-

 > I will never forget the scene in the movie Dr Zivargo

Frost is the solid deposition of water vapor, directly from gaseous
to solid phase, from saturated air on a solid surface that is
chilled below the dew point of the surrounding air AND colder than 0
C. Objects on which frost tends to form first generally have low
specific heat and/or high thermal emissivity.

Rime "frost" is an icy solid and occurs in very humid conditions
when water vapour goes through a liquid phase where the surface is
wet by condensation before freezing.

Hoar frost is feathery or fern-like and forms on exposed objects on
cold clear nights when heat losses into the open skies cause objects
to become colder than the surrounding air.

This can happen inside buildings if daytime moisture infiltrates
when the building is colder than the outside air from the prior
night's chill.

Window frost is hoar frost that happens when a glass pane is exposed
to very cold air on the outside and moderately moist air on the
inside. If the indoor air is very humid rather than moderately so,
water will first condense in small droplets and then freeze into
clear ice (rime).

GJ> Never having experienced such a deadly cold climate, I wouldn't know
GJ> how valid such a depiction of cold would be. The moisture of the hoar
GJ> frost would have to have come from somewhere.

BS> Artistic license for the film, I think.

I have never seen hoar in a building as dramatic as that in real
life. But it certainly does happen.

BS> somewhere around 0F to so, the water in the
BS> air starts to freeze and fall in a dust like consistency.

That's why I have commented in the past that it only snows heavily
here in Nov and March. In Dec., Jan. and Feb. we just get a little
"dust".

It can also remain suspended, if very fine, and create an ice fog.
This is very common in Yellowknife which can get quite cold and
arid. The water for the ice crystals come from building chimney and
automobile emissions.

GJ> A jet aircraft gets its supply of cabin pressurisation air from
GJ> outside the plane, where the temperature is around -50C, so its
GJ> moisture content would effectively be zero. A large proportion of the
GJ> internal air is recirculated, which brings up the humidity level of
GJ> the air from passengers' sweat, breath, burps and farts. It is still
GJ> quite low, is indicated by the lack of condensation on the outside of
 GJ> your iced drink.

And the sore throat you get the next day.

GJ> would have been a temptation for the FA to announce, "There, now
GJ> remember what I told you!".

Buffalo Joe's stewart doesn't recite the spiel but merely plays a
tape. One day the tape recorder didn't work so he tried to do the
spiel but forgot the wording. So he said simply, "Seatbelts. No
smoking. The seat cushions are lame ass floatation devices. You know
the drill. Nuff said."

All the Canadian in-flight safety announcements must be bilingual by
law. Air Canada does them live but Westjet which has its
headquarters in Alberta and does not fly east of Toronto has very
few bilingual employees so they rely on tapes and the flight
attendant just mimes the movements. (Canadian North and First Air
also do the drill in Inuktitut on most flights.)
