JW> those food and shelter are attainable. Compass handy but not needed.

ML> In familiar territory, or one where the topography is, as
ML> they say, an open book, maybe. My sense of direction was
ML> sucked out of my brain to the degree that I'm beginning to
ML> take a compass out in the city, even ones that are somewhat
ML> familiar. I doubt that I'll get to the point of needing a
 ML> handheld GPS, though.

After completely losing my sense of direction a few times,
particularly when coming out of underground train stations in strange
cities under an overcast sky, I bought a small, spherical compass
which can be pinned to my shirt-front. That leaves both my hands free
to open the map, hold bags, etc.

Title: Some Dried Famine And Travel Foods
 Categories: Native, Info
      Yield: 1 servings

           Lichens
           Biscuit root
           Chuli salmon

In one of my posts at www.coyotecooks.wordpress.com, I give and
illustrate a specific example my family considers "famine food"--it's
a type of dark lichen that grows in the trees. It's related to a
legend about Coyote's vain son who climbed into the trees and got his
beautiful long hair caught. To remember his son, Coyote turned the
hair into this lichen. It's gathered (this is dealt with in detail on
the post) and processed into "bricks" that can be easily stored.
They are then soaked in water and result in a sort of gray-green
  "pudding."

While I was raised to consider this "famine food," it is sometimes
served during "feast days" with other traditional foods. I'm also
told that in some other areas north of us (including Canada) this
isn't considered "famine food," but simply another traditional part
  of the diet.

I'm also unclear exactly when to draw the line on what is and isn't
supposed to be a "famine" concern, other than knowing always hearing
my elders refer to the lichen as such. For example, elders used to
talk about "travel food" which usually referred to dried food that
was very light and easy to carry. Most of our roots, for example, can
be ground up and when still moist, pressed by hand into small "cakes"
or a better description would be a sort of "cookie"--that fits the
center of your hand, which is what you use to form it. This is then
usually described by using the suffix "-mah" at the end of the word
for the particular root..."mah" normally is used to pluralize a noun.
Just so, what we call in English "Biscuit Root" is "luchx"--so when
you make this sort of "cookie" it's then "luchx-mah."

There is also a great traditional dish--Chuli-- made by taking a
whole salmon, drying it in a basket and then grinding down the
results into a fine powder...and to be honest, you don't get much of
this "powder" from a whole salmon. You can sprinkle Chuli over your
other food. The whole point of this is that it's really easy to store
and carry a whole salmon as Chuli.

While I have never heard of either of these being "famine food" they
would certainly be stored and saved for "later." After you had
exhausted all your "regular" stored food, then you'd hit the dried
bricks of black lichen...but on the other hand, you should have gone
ahead and prepared the lichen when you were busy preparing and
storing the other items... From: Ty Nolan <eagledancer) To: Native

I have just heard that a Mr Choudri in India, has broken the previous
record of 32 hours of continuous violin playing, with a 50 hour
performance. He also holds the record of 92 hours of continuous sitar
playing. (I have no information on whether he suffered from RSI.)
