GJ> Except that the vendors at the local Farmers' Market bring their
GJ> veggies 20 km from their farms just up the road at Two Wells, while
GJ> the local chain supermarket get theirs from the huge farms on the
GJ> Atherton Tableland in Queensland, 2000 km away. Even locally grown
GJ> chain s/market vegetables have to be delivered to the central
GJ> distribution point by the small trucks before the larger ones take
GJ> them to the retail stores.

NB> I realize that Wegmans is probably an anomoly... but the local farmers
NB> deliver locally-grown veggies and fruits directly to local stores,
NB> whether the ones here in the Rochester area or the newer ones in other
NB> states like PA, NJ, MD and VA.... Interestingly, other chains, in our
NB> area anyway, also have made arrangements with local farmers for at
NB> least semi-locally delivery... I'm not sure in the latter case whether
NB> there's a somewhat more central distribution point in the area,

Some years ago while shopping in NYS, I had noticed that Wegmans had
notices about their "just delivered" sweetcorn, which was indeed of
superior flavour and tenderness. I just wish our two main supermarket
chains of Coles and Woolworths would do that instead of routing
everything through 2 or 3 main warehouses. My local "Lucky Asian"
grocer, otoh, has suppliers coming in all through the morning with
fresh green-leaf vegetables. His durians arrive frozen, from
Thailand. Some other foods are fresh in on specific days of the week,
like locally grown balut, on Thursdays.

 GJ> "Achacha"?

GJ> owner found rather pleasing was that the trees withstood recent
GJ> floods, followed by the strong winds associated with cyclone Yasi.

NB> That's a nice bonus, indeed... :) Something that can withstand
 NB> weather.

Something to be considered when setting up a plantation in the cyclone
belt. Until Yasi, its resistance to storms had not been tested.

One unfortunate rambutan grower had just got his plantation into
production after it had been wiped out by cyclone Larry, 5 years ago,
and then along came Yasi which blew them all out again. Some banana
growers had trimmed off the leaves of their plants just before Yasi
hit, and that saved most of them from being blown over.

GJ> in one week 4.1 million tonnes of soy was exported, mostly to China.

NB> Indeed interesting. :) Especially exporting soy back to China....

Some to be returned to USA in bottles. :)

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

      Title: Chinatown Soy Sauce Chicken
 Categories: Chinese, Chicken
      Yield: 6 Servings

      1 Star anise
    3/4 c Soy sauce
1/3 c Dark brown sugar (packed)
    1/4 c Dry sherry; ** see note
      1 tb Honey
      3 Cloves garlic; minced
      3 sl Fresh ginger; smashed
  3 1/2 lb Chicken; well rinsed &
           - Dried

In a nonreactive pot large enough to hold the chicken snugly, gently
boil 1 cup water and the star anise, covered, for 20 minutes.

In a small bowl, mix the soy sauce, brown sugar, sherry, honey,
garlic and ginger, and add the mixture to the pot. Cover and bring to
a boil; then reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes. Add
the chicken, laying it on one side, and bring the liquid back to a
boil. Cover and turn the heat to low. Simmer, basting frequently, for
  15 minutes.

Turn the chicken to the other side and simmer, basting frequently, for
  another 15 minutes.

Turn once more, this time breast-side-up, and cook until golden
brown, 15 minutes more. Remove the chicken and let cool to room
temperature. Reheat the cooking liquid and spoon out about 2 tbsp
onto each plate before serving the carved chicken.
