Glen Jamieson Said to Dave Drum about LOCATION LOCATION LO10220

GJ> GJ> I had hopes, as it is American in origin...

GJ> DD> _SOUTH_ American. Not, as you style it "USAn".

GJ> If I meant from or pertaining to USA, I would have said "USAn" as a
GJ> convenient abbreviation. However, when I refer to the whole lump of
GJ> land from Nunavut to Terra del Fuego, I use the Anglicised version
GJ> of the original name, "Amerigo", as that is how it appears on the
GJ> first map, drawn by Martin Waldseemuller in 1507. He gave it to
GJ> that country in honour of the man who did most of the exploration of
GJ> it, Amerigo Vespucci, of Florence. It is fortunate for Australia
GJ> that the custom of naming continents after explorers' first names

Hardly a custom. Yurp, Asia, Antarctica, even tiny little pretend, sort-
of, continent Australia ain't named after explorers. Some countries,
possibly. AFAIK your island continent is the only one where a single
country makes up the whole political structure of the continent.

GJ> did not continue. James Cook did most of the early exploration in
GJ> these parts, so the country could have finished up being named after
GJ> him. Can you imagine the image problem we would have had if our
GJ> country had been called, "Jim"! Our cricket team would be called
GJ> "The Jimminies"!

Or possibly the "Cookies"

GJ> So what one-word name would you use for the whole land separating
GJ> the Pacific and Atlantic oceans?

The Americas are individually named on all the maps I can remember
seeing. Youse is just being chauvinistic. Bv)=

Since you seem to be so big on custom - the customary manner of
referring to the United States of America, even by religious fanatics
who hate us, is "America".

GJ> DD> You have, however, stirred me to go look at the sneezy fruit.
GJ> DD> It sure does sound like a sneeze - even though it may not make
GJ> DD> one sneeze.

GJ> To me it sounds more like a dance. And like dances from that region
GJ> of (?) which have become popular elsewhere in (?), it could well
GJ> have been eaten by anyone in (?), including Echo people. (G!)

GJ> DD> And, as it seems to be a fruit it is substantially different
GJ> DD> from okra - more kin to the Kiwi fruit (Chinese gooseberry) or
GJ> DD> (American) paw-paw.
GJ> DD> www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/pawpaw.html

GJ> It does have a large stone in its middle, but the Australian growers
GJ> hope to breed them with a smaller stone, as has been done with
GJ> lychees and some other tropical fruits.

I was not referring to pits or internal structure, rather to usage. And
the paw-paw does have substantial sized seeds in it. Two or three dark
brown/black pits about the size of the first joint of my pinky finger.

GJ> DD> Title: Baroque Achacha Cocktail
GJ> DD> Categories: Five, Beverages, Booze, Citrus, Wine

GJ> DD> 1 Achacha
GJ> DD> ds Lemon juice
GJ> DD> ds Sugar syrup
GJ> DD> ds White rum

GJ> DD> Created by the friendly bar staff at Baroque Bistro &
GJ> DD> Patisserie; 88 George Street, The Rocks, Sydney

GJ> Hmmm. I didn't know that it had already made its way into booze in
GJ> Australia. I will have to look for it in the Central Market.

Are you kidding, most Australians I have known will drink hooch mixed
with most anything ... or mixed with nothing at all.

GJ> BTW, I think I saw that "Amerigo" map in the Doge's House in Venice.
GJ> Do you know where it is now, as there was some talk of it being
GJ> bought by USA for Zillions of Euros?

No idea and less interest as it was not all that accurate a map and I
couldn't afford it anyway.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06
