Glen Jamieson Said to Dave Drum about LOCATION LOCATION 10222

GJ> -=> Quoting Dave Drum to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> GJ> of the original name, "Amerigo", as that is how it appears on
GJ> GJ> the first map, drawn by Martin Waldseemuller in 1507. He gave
GJ> GJ> it to that country in honour of the man who did most of the
GJ> GJ> exploration of it, Amerigo Vespucci, of Florence. It is
GJ> GJ> fortunate for Australia that the custom of naming continents
GJ> GJ> after explorers' first names

GJ> DD> Hardly a custom. Yurp, Asia, Antarctica, even tiny little
GJ> DD> pretend, sort- of, continent Australia ain't named after
GJ> DD> explorers. Some

GJ> Rhodesia was, sort of, but is not now. That custom died out

Cecil's namesake country is NOT a continent. It is/was located on the
continent of Africa. For that matter Rhodesia was never recognised as a
state by the Brits - who called it Southern Rhodesia.

GJ> quickly. Quite a few cities around the world have been named after
GJ> monarchs, and probably some countries also, as well as Philippines.

GJ> DD> countries, possibly. AFAIK your island continent is the only
GJ> DD> one where a single country makes up the whole political
GJ> DD> structure of the continent.

GJ> The Republic of Nauru is comprised of a single island, but it could
GJ> hardly be described as a continent. I walked around it in 4 hours.

GJ> GJ> did not continue. James Cook did most of the early exploration
GJ> GJ> in these parts, so the country could have finished up being
GJ> GJ> named after him. Can you imagine the image problem we would
GJ> GJ> have had if our country had been called, "Jim"! Our cricket
GJ> GJ> team would be called "The Jimminies"!

GJ> DD> Or possibly the "Cookies"

GJ> (Groan!) I hadn't thought of that alternative possibility.

Be glad you're not working with the truth, then. The first recorded
European sighting of the Australian mainland and the first recorded
European landfall on the Australian continent were attributed to the
Dutch navigator Willem Janszoon. The Dutch charted the whole of the
western and northern coastlines of "New Holland" during the 17th
century, but made no attempt at settlement. Predating Cook by quite a
span of years.

Sorry (but, not very) to be so pedantic and burst your bubble(s).
Joggerfy (geography) is a hobby of mine.

GJ> GJ> So what one-word name would you use for the whole land
GJ> GJ> separating the Pacific and Atlantic oceans?

GJ> DD> The Americas are individually named on all the maps I can
GJ> DD> remember seeing. Youse is just being chauvinistic. Bv)=

GJ> Not on the original map. On that the lot is called "Amerigo".

I really don't care about an inaccurate scrap of parchment. They could
have called it Incognita for all that Vespucci understood about it.

GJ> DD> Since you seem to be so big on custom - the customary manner of
GJ> DD> referring to the United States of America, even by religious
GJ> DD> fanatics who hate us, is "America".

GJ> That is because it is easily recognisable when written in blood on
GJ> posters, which are then burnt. Young Jim, however, has pointed out
GJ> the best collective name that I was looking for - "The Americas".

Does not obviate the fact that there are TWO separate continents - into
either of which one could drop your "continent" and it would be
swallowed up without a trace. And the Americas are named separately on
all the maps of any currency. End of story, no matter what you wish were
true.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Pickled African Peaches
 Categories: Condiments, Fruits, Chilies, Herbs
      Yield: 3 servings

4 lb Slightly under ripe peaches
      3 c Sliced onions
    1/3 c Olive oil
      1 tb Turmeric
      1 tb Ground cumin
      2 ts Minced garlic
      1 ts Minced ginger
      1 ts Dried red pepper
    1/2 ts Pepper
    1/2 ts Ground cardamom
    1/2 ts Dry mustard
    1/4 ts Nutmeg
    1/4 ts Ground cloves.
      2 c White wine vinegar
2/3 c Firmly packed brown sugar
    2/3 c White sugar

Haven't made this for a couple of years, but it's pretty
tasty. Saute onions in olive oil for five minutes or until
tender. Add spices and saute for 2 minutes. Stir in vinegar
and sugars, then simmer, partly covered for 15 minutes.

Blanch peaches slightly in boiling water for 1 minute.
Drain, peel pit and slice. Add to onion mixture and simmer
just until tender. Transfer with slotted spoon to sterilized
  mason jar.

Reduce syrup over high heat to 1 1/2 cups. Add slowly to
jars to almost cover fruit. Stir. Fill jars slowly with
  syrup, cap loosely
  and cool.

Tighten caps and let stand in dark place at least 2 weeks.

I don't remember where this came from, but I suspect that
it was either Gourmet or Sunset Magazine. In my handwritten
copy it also called for 2 teaspoons ground cumin as well as
one tablespoon. I omitted it above, but I think it should
have been 2 teaspoons ground coriander.
