ML> Exactly. But the parking is still free - though this may
ML> change at some point, as it turns out that this region,
ML> one of the first oil boom areas, is now being scouted out
ML> for natural gas, and BP and Mobil have swooped in, the
ML> result being that the restaurants are spiffing up, and
ML> Wegmans, Weis, and Giant now carry full lines of Indian
ML> and Chinese condiments and sauces, and it's hard to get a
ML> hotel room, not that I need one, for under $150 a night.

Good thing that I'm usually only driving thru, then. :) And if stuck,
I also know people in the area... :)

ML> What's frightening is that as I tend to fly the same
ML> routes on the same flights, various flight crews have
ML> come to know me. I was on one trip and the passenger
ML> next to me, a very pretty Japanese girl, was incredibly
ML> deferential and nice, and I thought, I must remind her of
ML> her father or something, but then she visited up in the
ML> galley, and I realized that she was a flight attendant
ML> (deadheading in first class to her next assignment) whom
ML> I'd had on a couple flights years previously.

Interesting how and where one gets to be known.. We've had people
recognize us in one restaurant that we know from another one...
generally as wait staff... primarily in our roster of Asian
restaurants... I'm less surprised when, returning to a spot we are
pretty regular, people there recognize us. But to be recognized
somewhat out of context is more of a surprise. :) Either we are
especially memorable, or they have exceptional memories... ;)

ML>> subway a year or two ago - he scruffed up and did the
ML>> open case playing for spare change thing. Suffice it
ML>> to say that he didn't make much, and relatively few
ML>> people took notice of him.
NB>> I remember hearing him talk about that on Chris O'Riley's radio show
NB>> From the Top, when he was a special "celebrity" guest... maybe it's
 NB>> an "unspoiled" thing...? ;)

ML> Maybe it's an indication that people in Washington are
ML> nowhere near so cultured as they like to think they are.

A good possibility...

ML> Or that the trappings (e.g., if he were wearing a tux
ML> or an Armani suit) are more important than the product
 ML> to Washingtonians at least.

Also a possibility... and add to that that context generally does have
a lot to do with how people are recognized...

NB>> Or perhaps none of them has been "blessed" with family they'd rather
NB>> not be related to...? ;)

ML> Some of them have in fact taken me aside afterwards and
ML> told me that they understood, as they have psychotics in
ML> the family too - as I figure most people do.

That, I'm not at all surprised at... from my experience most people do
indeed have psychotics or neurotics or worse in their family... not all
will admit to it, at least not in public... ;0 I am one of 8 siblings,
I have one sister who is definitely neurotic, and another that is rather
more psychotic... the rest of us are mostly normal... ;)
