Glen Jamieson Said to Dave Drum about LOCATION LOCATION 10226

GJ> DD> Be glad you're not working with the truth, then. The first
GJ> DD> recorded European sighting of the Australian mainland and the
GJ> DD> European first recorded landfall on the Australian continent
GJ> DD> were attributed to the Dutch navigator Willem Janszoon. The
GJ> DD> Dutch charted the whole of the western and northern coastlines
GJ> DD> of "New Holland" during the 17th century, but made no attempt
GJ> DD> at settlement. Predating Cook by quite a span of years.

GJ> DD> Sorry (but, not very) to be so pedantic and burst your
GJ> DD> bubble(s). Joggerfy (geography) is a hobby of mine.

GJ> Are you sure you are not getting confused with Abel Janszoon Tasman,
GJ> who sailed around these parts in 1642? He charted some of the
GJ> Northern coastline, and sailed between Van Diemen's land and the
GJ> mainland of New Holland. Cooky charted the East coast, and took
GJ> possession of the country - or at least the Eastern part of it - for
GJ> Britain. He did not mention to the local inhabitants that he had
GJ> done so. They learnt of that later.

http://www.nla.gov.au/exhibitions/southland/Char-Willem_Janszoon.html

Also: http://www.voc.iinet.net.au/duyfken.html

Please note that these are BOTH Australian sources.

GJ> The first accurate charting of the whole of Terra Australis was done
GJ> by Matthew Flinders and George Bass, who finished that job in 1803.
GJ> Part way around the country, they met Frenchman Nicholas Baudin
GJ> doing the same thing, going the other way. As Britain and France
GJ> were at war at that time, they were technically enemies, but as they
GJ> were scientific types and not military, they ignored European
GJ> squabbles and in one of the first examples of Australian
GJ> multiculturalism, decided to have dinner together. Naturally, it
GJ> was on the French ship, as their cuisine was far better than the
GJ> Brits.

I only referenced "The first recorded European sighting of the
Australian mainland and the European first recorded landfall on the
Australian continent ... "

GJ> GJ> Not on the original map. On that the lot is called "Amerigo".

GJ> DD> I really don't care about an inaccurate scrap of parchment.
GJ> DD> They could have called it Incognita for all that Vespucci
GJ> DD> understood about it.

GJ> That map was more or less, generally correct enough so that I could
GJ> recognise that it was your patch of dirt.

Do you still need to get those cataracts taken care of??

GJ> GJ> posters, which are then burnt. Young Jim, however, has pointed
GJ> GJ> out the best collective name that I was looking for - "The
GJ> GJ> Americas".

GJ> DD> Does not obviate the fact that there are TWO separate
GJ> DD> continents - into either of which one could drop your
GJ> DD> "continent" and it would be swallowed up without a trace. And
GJ> DD> the Americas are named separately on all the maps of any
GJ> DD> currency. End of story, no matter what you wish were true.

GJ> According to some references I have seen, sometimes they are divided
GJ> into North, Central and South America.

I have _NEVER_ seen the area referenced as Central America called a
continent. It is, properly the southernmost, isthmian portion of the
North American continent, which connects with South America on the
southeast. When considered part of the unified continental model, it is
considered a subcontinent. So, Central America is no more a continent
than is India (which is also a sub-continent).

GJ> Even you use "the Americas" (as above), so rather than list all the
GJ> countries on that double continent, if I wish to, I presume I can
GJ> use that term with your approval. After all, there are some
GJ> products which are common to most of the Americas, such as corn,
GJ> possums, potatoes and chillies - and zucchini.

I use "the Americas" only peripherally, and only when referencing the
major land masses in the Western Hemisphere. When referring to the
separate continents I refer to them by their commonly accepted names of
North America and South America. And to the countries by their commonly
accepted English names ... although, I will, at time, call one of the
non-U.S.A. countries by either it's actual political name - or a
pejorative (such as Canuckistan) for humourous effect.

I do hope to not burn any bridges - for if the Alaskan Ding-bat gets
elected President in 2012 I hope to be on the figurative "Last Train
From Shanghai" to Canada or New Zealand (where I understand property may
be bought cheaply these days) where I will apply for political refugee
status.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Shanghai Duck
 Categories: Oriental, Poultry, Herbs
      Yield: 8 servings

8 lg Scallions; in 2"/5cm lengths
2 md Star anise; broken in 16
            - sections
2 sl Gingerroot; 1.25"/31 cm dia
      5 lb (2 kg) Duck
      1 c Dark soy sauce
      1 c Light soy sauce
      1 c Water
    3/4 c Sugar
           Honey

Put the scallions, star anise and gingerroot in a
heavy pot. Place the duck, breast side up in the pot.
Mix the remaining ingredients and pour over the duck.
Cover and bring to a boil. Simmer for about two hours
or until tender, turning every half-hour.

Remove duck from pan and place on a shallow dish, rub
honey on duck, place duck in a 400øF/2045øC oven just
  until crispy...not too long.

Remove and chop into small pieces. Reserve liquid and
serve at the table as a sauce. Sometimes I thicken it
a little but most of the time we just serve it as is.
